Meet Selena Fulton

Today I’m pleased to introduce you to Selena Fulton.

Welcome, Selena. Please tell us about yourself.

I was born in the Midwest, but have lived all my adult life in Florida. I am married for twenty-eight years and my daughter’s birthday is TODAY. Happy birthday, baby. She’s twenty-four.

I have to say, you sure don't look old enough to have a 24-year-old daughter.

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

I’ve loved books since before I could read. However I wrote my first poem when I was nine. My family made over me, and encouraged me to do more. When I was a kid, my fantasy was to be the youngest author featured on the Mike Douglas show. LOL.

How long does it take you to write a book?

It takes me about five months.

What is your work schedule like when you're writing?

My most productive times are early morning and late evening. I guess this routine began when I was working. While recently unemployed, I get out of bed, fix my coffee and get to work. My muse returns after suppertime.

You're lucky. Mine only works in the morning. 

What do you like to do when you're not writing?

I love making jewelry! I love beads and go crazy with all the textures, shapes and colors. Many times when I am struggling with a scene, I turn to my bead table and the juices flow while using a different form of creativity. I also love walking the beach and going camping.

What does your family think of your writing?

They are supportive and proud of me.

How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?

At this moment, I’ve only published one. But I’ve written seven, and have several that are almost complete first drafts.

What do you think makes a good story?

When you read the final page and can’t stop wondering what happens next.

What is the best part of writing for you?

I am constantly amazed how the words flow from my fingertips. About fourteen months ago, I broke my wrist. Did that stop me from writing? Nope. I learned to do everything with my left hand. Do you know most of the letters we use are on the left side anyway? Some suggested speaking my stories into a recorder, but it didn’t work for me. I was thrilled when I could type with both hands again! I can literally close my eyes sometimes and visualize the scene. I laugh, I cry, and sometimes I get so angry I pound the keyboard with their fury. Whatever the character feels.

I know exactly  what you mean about words flowing from the fingers. It's amazing.

What do you enjoy most about life?

My family.

Ooh, good answer. 

Where do you start when writing? Research, plotting, outline, or...?

Page one. Many times, I have an idea and start writing. It’s not really an outline, but more of a synopsis. Then it grows.

What did you learn from writing your first book?

I learned I CAN finish a novel length story.

How many hours a day to you spend writing?

As many as I can!

If you could give the younger version of yourself advice what would it be?

Don’t let others dissuade you from your dreams. So many of us do what is expected of us and never reach for our dreams. My mother died last year. There were still so many things she wished she had done, and now it’s too late. Yes, be responsible, but don’t forget to dream. And then work for it! Then at least at the end of your life, you’ll know you tried. By the way, Mom got to see my cover before she died. That meant the world to me. I miss her so much.

Tell us about your latest book.

The book I’m currently working on began as a time travel. I do love the concept! But as the editing phase continues, it has become more of a mystery with time travel elements.
