#WeWriWA THE PROTECTOR

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors where authors share an 8 - 10 sentence snippet. Be sure to visit the other authors. You can find them here.

Thanks to everyone who visited last week. I love your comments as you try to figure out where the story is going. Last week, Dillan confronted Rissa in the dark spaceport, assuming she and her cohorts are robbing the ship next to his.

Rissa never had to look up to most men, other than Kiran. Her size used to bother her, but since she began running a tavern on the Frontier, she was grateful for her height and strength, yet this man made her feel small. When she looked up, her hood and mask slipped so much she couldn’t see him very well. His overlong hair hung down to blend in with a heavy beard, and his broad shoulders and chest made her think twice about taking him down—that and the blaster in his hand.
“Am I interrupting something?” he asked with fake casualness.
“Nah,” she said, trying to disguise her voice and waved her hand, equally casual, “just a little surprise party for the pilot.”
“Stealing a man’s cargo is hardly worthy of a party,” he said, his tone no longer casual but harsh, “what the—”
Rissa looked over her shoulder at Pela, a child attached to both of her hands, as she led a parade of children to the open back door of the spaceport where Kiran waved her forward.
“Is that a slave ship?” the man behind her demanded.
After leaving the children with Kiran, Pela rushed to Rissa, crying, “The kids are really scared, the pilot told them slavers might try to take them away.”

Apologies for the creative punctuation, which was done to keep within the sentence limit.

Who knew rescuing two girls from traffickers would bring down a world of hurt?

After tavern owner Rissa Dix rescues two girls from a slave ship, she must rally the townsfolk to prevent traffickers from returning. Mining heir Dillan Rusteran has loved her for years. Little do they know that by rescuing more children they're tangling with a galactic trafficking ring.
