#WeWriWa - THE PROTECTOR: Will They Get The Kids Out In Time? #sfr

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors where authors share an 8 - 10 sentence snippet. Be sure to visit the other authors. You can find them here.

Thanks to everyone who visited last week. I always enjoy your comments. Here's where we are. A stranger confronted Rissa in the spaceport as she and her friends are trying to rescue kids from traffickers. We pick up where we left off last week.

“What can I do to help?” The man from the Volpian Caravel must have followed her to the cargo ramp. At least, he’d had the good sense to hide his blaster. The kids were scared enough.
“Go back to your space yacht and forget you saw this. Or us.” She raced inside the dark hold. By the Matriarch, the place stunk. How long had these children been locked up without proper sanitation? She shook off that thought and worried about getting them out before she and the others were caught. Who knew when the dock master might come by?

Who knew rescuing two girls from traffickers would bring down a world of hurt?

After tavern owner Rissa Dix rescues two girls from a slave ship, she must rally the townsfolk to prevent traffickers from returning. Mining heir Dillan Rusteran has loved her for years. Little do they know that by rescuing more children they're tangling with a galactic trafficking ring.

  1. I'm glad she is getting them out, but what horrible conditions they were left in. Great snippet! :)

  2. I'm interested in that mysterious stranger, I have a feeling if she confided in him she might find him more supportive than she thinks. I understand her being cautious though.

    1. She doesn't recognize him at all. She should . . . and will soon.

  3. Something makes me suspect that the man from the Volpian Caravel is one of those infuriatingly stubborn cusses who won't do anything that she asked, but will instead use that blaster to save her and kids. Don't you hate guys like that? ;-)

  7. Interesting... hope he turns out to be a good guy - like Ed said, you know, those annoyingly heroic kinda guys.

  8. Rissa obviously can't trust him yet, so she just tells him to butt out. But I agree with Ed.

  13. I'm hoping he's going to help her. Great imagery of how the kids had to live in the hold.

    1. Thanks, Karen. I tried to imagine the conditions in ships' holds when slaves were taken. Even in trucks carrying illegal immigrants.

  17. "By the Matriarch..." I like it! Alien to my "ears" but sounds human enough to draw emotion. :-)
