Television Binge Watching #MFRWAuthor

For two weeks, I participated in MFRW's 52-Week Blog Challenge on Fridays. I was really happy about the 3rd week's topic--bingeing on TV shows. So happy, I wrote my post before realizing I'd already committed to Chrys Fey's "I Survived" Blogfest last Friday. Waste not, want not, as my mother would say. Even though, it's not Friday, here's my post.

TV Shows I Binge On

If you follow my blog, you know I love watching movies and television. Never ask me to name my favorite book, movie, or TV show. I can’t. My favorites change like Michigan weather. Binge watching takes favorites to an extreme. Let me tell you about some shows I’ve binged on.

Firefly: science fiction adventure. Long gone, but not forgotten. After watching the movie Serenity, I found a DVD with all fourteen episodes. Watched them all the way through and then over again several times. What’s not to like about Captain Reynolds (Nathan Fillion)?

Stargate SG-1: action/adventure. I missed all ten seasons when they were on originally. I’d catch one here and there, but not faithfully until we got Amazon Prime. Binged on all of them, just not all at once. Interesting premise (traveling via a portal to different planets) and a great cast.

Farscape: science fiction, action/adventure/romance. Totally missed this series during its four-season run. Besides the sci-fi aspect, I loved the creatures designed by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop. The romance started slow and built. I just hated the way the series ended.

The above were shows I binge-watched because they were no longer on. But I have other favs besides science fiction. Here are my current ones. Thank goodness, we’re getting the Ovation Channel now on cable.

Murdoch Mysteries (aka The Artful Detective): mystery. My sister gave us the 1st season on DVD for Christmas one year. She is so lucky to live near Detroit because she gets a Canadian channel and watches new episodes as they're released. For ten years, Detective Murdoch, with the Toronto Constabulary, solves crimes in the 1890s using unusual at the time (but commonplace now) scientific methods. Meanwhile, he and Medical Coroner Dr. Julia Ogden danced around each other in a will-they/won’t-they romance. Based on books by Maureen Jennings. Before Ovation came to our cable network, I went to the library and borrowed the DVDs.

Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries: mystery. Another recommendation from my sister. Phryne Fisher of Melbourne solves mysteries in the late 1920s in this Australian three-season series. Based on the books by Kerry Greenwood. I'd read the first book, Cocaine Blues, first in the series before watching the TV series. Love the period costumes, Phryne’s battles over injustice, and her banter with Detective Jack Robinson. I haven't seen all the episodes but, sheesh, would they just kiss!

Father Brown: mysteries on PBS. You might recognize the actor who plays the sleuth-priest in a 1950s English village from Doctor Who (Rory's dad) and Harry Potter (Ron Weasley's dad), Mark Williams. He's accomplishes are a hoot. As I've said with regard to most of my favorite shows, it's the cast that makes the show.

See what I mean about not being able to choose one?

Do you binge watch? What are your favorites?

  1. Firefly is one of my favorite binge-watch shows. And if I watch one episode, I'll want to watch them all. I haven't seen any of the other shows you've listed, though. (And I call myself a TV addict...)

  2. Diane, I've binged on Miss Fischer. It's a fun series. If you are an Amazon customer, you get it as part of your membership. And it looks like Murdoch is also part of prime. I'll check it out. Thanks!

    1. Glad you like Miss Fisher. Do you get the Ovation Channel? If so, look for The Artful Detective (aka Murdoch). I think it's on Wed mornings. I DVR it since I should be writing in the morning. LOL

    1. I thought about adding Sherlock, but my favorites was getting too long. LOL Love Sherlock. Did the last episode of Season 4 feel like the end of the series?

  6. I binge watch Once Upon A Time and The Office. Those are my favorites. I'm not much of a sci-fi person, but I've heard Firefly is really good.

    1. Firefly was/is more like the wild west with space ships. LOL But it was the dynamics between the cast members that made the show so good.

  7. Your binge shows are really interesting! I've never heard of a couple of them. I LOVED Firefly although I never saw it while it was running, only after (as a binge). :-) Our most recent binges were MOZART IN THE JUNGLE (Amazon original), about a fictional orchestra in NYC, its fun/crazy conductor, musicians and board members. Also, MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE (also Amazon Prime) -- an alternate reality where Germany and Japan won WWII...fascinating look at the moral dilemmas faced by the Americans who now find themselves in leadership positions in Nazi America. We binged on 24, HOUSE OF CARDS (Netflix original)...I can't remember them all. We love binging. :-)

  10. I made notes. I like to have ideas handy when I sit down to binge watch. I'm like you- my favorites change a lot. Perhaps because WV has erratic weather also.

    1. We used to pick up the seasons on DVDs for our fav shows--NCIS, etc. With DVR & On Demand, even if we miss an episode, we can still catch it.

  11. One of my favorite series to watch over and over is The Closer on TNT (and it has a spin off Major Crimes). When it comes to Netflix series I tend to binge watch include Once Upon a Time and Agents of Shield. My father loves re-watching Seinfeld and Law and Order episodes. These are some nice shows that you binge on Diane and I'm embarrassed to confess though I loved watching Serenity multiple times I still haven't watched the Firefly series yet. Need to get on that.

    1. My sister is crazy about The Closer. I'll have to check out Agents of Shield. Many people talk about it. I liked Firefly better than Serenity. A lot more humor in the series than in the movie.

  12. FIREFLY!!! We own that one, and please tell me you've seen Serenity, the follow up movie. Best. Movie. So, so good.

I have several favorites too. For a while it was Falling Skies. I really like The Last Ship, or what I've seen of it. Merlin is an ALL TIME favorite. (The BBC one.) Sherlock. Prison Break. The Flash. Pushing Daisies. There are so many, but those are the ones that come to mind right away.
