#WeWriWa ~ THE SPY: He Didn't Trust Security? #sfr

Each weekend, the Weekend Writing Warriors share an 8 - 10 sentence snippet. Be sure to visit the other authors. You can find them here.

Thanks to everyone who visited last week. Your support and comments always give me new ideas.

I hope everyone enjoys the holidays.

I'm sharing snippets from The Spy: An Outer Rim Novel. It's the 4th book in my series featuring strong women on the frontier of space. Because this is a work in progress, any suggestions are greatly appreciated. I've jumped ahead to where Genna is at headquarters to meet with the Commissioner of the Clandestine Sector of Coalition of Planets Intelligence.

Please excuse the creative punctuation, necessary to keep this within the guidelines.

“Come in, come in,” Commissioner Vorinda gave a hearty laugh as he rose to greet her, “How are you, girl, did you have a good trip?” he spoke rapid-fire, as he strode around his large desk.
She waited until the assistant closed the door, “Yes, sir. I did.”
He ignored her outstretched hand and enveloped her in a hug that took her breath away—the older man didn’t know his own strength. His enthusiastic greeting surprised her, considering their limited contact, yet she found the embrace oddly comforting—how she imagined her father would hug her, if he gave a sherd.
Commissioner Vorinda perched on the corner of his desk, while waving her to sit in a comfy-looking chair on the left. “Genna, dear, I am so glad to see you.”
His use of her real name came as such a surprise she continued to stand—she’d been taught to never break cover.
“Sir, did you realize what you called me?”
“Of course—my office is soundproof, and Security sweeps for listening devices daily,” He winked at her, “so do I.”
He didn’t trust his own Security?

Tentative blurb:

Rookie agent must rescue veteran before his cover is blown.

Genna Nogaro, new to the Coalition of Planets’ Intelligence Commission, is assigned to bring in an undercover operative in Hallart’s organization. More experienced agents died before getting him out. Were they killed by the intergalactic gangster or has the operative gone rogue?

Quintall d’Sernin, con man extraordinaire, infiltrated the mob and moved up to be the gangster’s right-hand man. Hallart has his tentacles throughout the Coalition—business, industry, and government. Quin’s finally worked himself into a valued position. All he needs is the key to mob structure in order for Coalition forces to take down the entire organization.

Genna will pose as a new recruit to distract Hallart long enough for Quin to find the key. If they work together, they can accomplish more. But Quin and Genna’s lives are jeopardized by a mole in the Intelligence Commission. Will their true roles be revealed before they accomplish their goal?

  1. "if he gave a sherd" - the reason I love your books. You pull the reader so effortlessly into a different world. And this one, I'll bet, is dangerous for our heroine. Happy holidays, Di!

    1. Thanks, Nancy. Four books into that world, I'm still debating the wisdom of using a made-up word for sh*t. LOL Wishing you a great holiday, esp. with your grandguy.

  2. I can't help but be concerned that he broke her cover as well. I thought, as she did, that protocol demands it not be broken no matter what. Great complication!

  5. That is a surprising greeting from a high up intelligence officer. He seems way too casual. Nice work weaving in her conflicting feelings about the situation.

  9. I suppose being over-cautious is a handy thing for a spy, but breaking cover? Mmm, I don't know how far I should trust him.
