#WeWriWa ~ SWITCHED: Beam Me Home, Scotty

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors, where writers share snippets from their work-in-progress or new release. Thank you to everyone who stopped by last week.

I'm sharing snippets from my science fiction romance, Switched. This was my first published book, so it has a special place in my heart. It's on sale for 99 cents until April 30th.

Set up: Jessie Wyndom has been beamed aboard an alien spaceship, which she doesn't believe. I've skipped ahead and now Jessie and the Captain are in his quarters. The computer insists in identifying Jessie as Lieutenant Qilana, a crew member.

This snippet has been edited from the original.

Snippet:

“Captain?” Communications Officer Cabbeferron announced, “I have a time-delayed communiquĂ© from Lieutenant Qilana. I am transferring it to your vid unit.”

“On screen.” Marcus turned to the vid unit built into the wall above his desk. He glanced at Jessica whose eyes widened as she stared at the replication of her image on the vid screen.

“Captain, I have transported to Earth to find my biological parents and to meet my twin, Jessica Wyndom. She and I are victims of the Gemini Experiment.” Qilana spoke in typical Serenian tone, devoid of emotion.

And a little more, if you're interested:

“Thirty years ago, a scientist from Serenia transported fetuses from Earth into volunteer host mothers from our home planet. Doctor Cenamola, being compassionate, only removed one of a set of twins, leaving one child for the Earth mother.”

Jessie shook her head. What a convoluted bunch of hooey. She wasn’t going to believe this…this story they were concocting. Yet, so many things seemed real. These people acted like they thought it was all real. Could it be… No, this is not happening. This is a dream. All because I fell asleep during a Star Trek movie.

Great mask, sweetie. My brother has a lot to answer for. I’m royally ticked that he let a stranger into my house." Jessie took a deep breath. "Okay, folks. I’ve been a good sport, but I’ve had  enough of this game.” She raised her hands and head. “Beam me home, Scotty, there’s no intelligent life here. You guys have fun at someone else’s expense.”

“Jessica, please listen to me,” the woman on the screen said. “I must meet the family I never knew. While I didn’t mean to transport you aboard the ship, you can learn about my world as I learn about yours, my sister. We will meet as soon as—”

The screen went blank.

Blurb:

Kidnapped by aliens? By mistake?

Wise-cracking mechanic Jessie Wyndom gets the surprise of her life when she's accidentally transported aboard an Alliance of Planets starship. Then, she learns an identical twin who was raised on an alien planet has taken her place on Earth. They are victims of a scientific experiment that separated Terran twins before birth. Jessie doesn't believe it. This is all a gag perpetrated by her brother and his nerdy friends.

Years of discipline enables Captain Marcus Viator to maintain the austere, emotionless persona prized on his planet, Serenia. Until he meets the bold, impertinent Jessie. She must go back to Earth before she disrupts his well-organized life. When he tries to return his unwilling visitor, he discovers the ship has left Earth's orbit--supposedly at his command. When more sabotage crops up, Marcus and Jessie must work together to protect the crew and themselves. As their attraction grows, treachery and violence force them into decisions that could separate them forever.

#WeWriWa ~ SWITCHED: Where Are We?

This is an amazing weekend, one that rarely happens. Three major religions are celebrating a high holiday: Easter, Passover, and Ramadan. However you celebrate, if you do, I'm sending happy wishes.

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors, where writers share snippets from their work-in-progress or new release. Thank you to everyone who stopped by last week.

From now through the end of April, my science fiction romance, Switched, is on sale for 99 cents. This was my first published book, so it has a special place in my heart.

Set up: Jessie Wyndom has been beamed aboard an alien spaceship, which she doesn't believe. She and the Captain just arrived on the bridge. We pick up where we left off last week.

Snippet:

Slowly, Jessie turned toward a crew of four seated at different stations. One looked human, the others were outfitted to look like alien species. “Your costumer and make-up artist must be professionals. I can’t get over this--it’s like I’m on the bridge of a spaceship.”

“You are on the bridge of a spaceship,” the man calling himself ‘Captain’ said. “More accurately, this is the Alliance of Planets research starship, Freedom.”

His pompous tone was back. She couldn’t resist. “Whatever you say, big guy.” Then, she gave him a wink to let him know she was willing to play along with this fantasy.

And a little more, if you're interested:

He stiffened his already straight shoulders.

“Don’t get all huffy on me now, Captain. Are they supposed to be your officers?” She waved at those seated at computer consoles around the room. “Hi, guys.”

Nobody responded. They just looked at her as if she were the alien. Except for the Captain. He shot her another look before pointing to each person. “This is my crew. Navigation Officer Glaxpher, Science Officer Xaropa, Communications Officer Cabbeferron, and First Officer Klegznef.”

The last person eyed her like he was a vulture and she was roadkill. He made her shiver in a totally different way from the hunk. She looked away. “Like I’m going to remember all their names,” she muttered. She lifted her chin. “Okay, Captain. Where are we really? This place is big enough to be Cobo Hall.”

He looked puzzled before he tapped the keypad on his watch. “Cobo Hall. Ah, a large place of assembly in Detroit, Michigan, USA. Detroit, a city known for the manufacture of despoilers of your atmosphere. Primitive vehicles you call cars.”

Great. An environmental nut. “Yep, that’s the Motor City all right.”

#WeWriWa ~ SWITCHED: Just Like In The Movies

From now through the end of April, my science fiction romance, Switched, is on sale for 99 cents. I haven't shared snippets from it in a long time. This was my first published book, so it has a special place in my heart.

Set up: Jessie Wyndom has been beamed aboard an alien spaceship, which she doesn't believe. She and the Captain are racing down the corridor to the bridge.

Years of discipline enables Captain Marcus Viator to maintain the austere, emotionless persona prized on his planet, Serenia. Until he meets the bold, impertinent Jessie. When more sabotage crops up, Marcus and Jessie must work together to protect the crew and themselves. As their attraction grows, treachery and violence force them into decisions that could separate them forever.

Snippet:

“So, big guy, what is this? A Trekkie convention or something? Whoa.” Jessie swiveled around to gawk at a green-skinned, eight-foot tall character passing by. “Who did that guy’s make-up? I can’t get over the costumes here. No wonder the ceilings are so high. They’d have to be to—”

Still gawking over her shoulder, she ran right smack into the Captain who must have stopped and turned around. His strong arms encircled her, steadying her against his hard, muscular chest.

“Sorry.” Her face flamed at being held by this superb specimen of manhood.

Those spectacular silver eyes seemed to sear her soul. A tremor rippled through her. Her breath caught in her throat. Geez, I need to get out more.

 And a little more:

The Captain abruptly released her. He looked almost as discombobulated as she felt by their close encounter. He tapped the keypad on his wrist and a portion of the wall parted. She was about to ask how they concealed the doors when she was stunned by the large room. Eyes wide, she followed him in.

“Mr. Glaxpher, why have we left Earth’s orbit?” he demanded.

Earth’s orbit? Yeah, sure.

All the people in the room looked at him. A blue-skinned guy answered, “You ordered our departure, sir.”

Captain Viator’s mouth tightened, his silver eyes narrowed. “Belay that order and return.”

Blue Boy looked startled. “Aye, sir.”

Nobody else said anything. Jessie felt a subtle shift as if the room was turning. That was weird. Finally, she couldn’t stand the silence. “Hey, this room is marvelous. Your set designer did a fabulous job. Is that a rear-projection screen? Wow. Looks like we’re traveling through space. Just like in the movies.”

Monday Morning Musing: Spring Tease, Cartoons, Book Sale

Spring Teaser.
That's what we call when the temps go up--on Saturday, it was 64
°--making us think Spring is here, then we wake up to snow. Nasty trick, Mother Nature.

Spring can come anytime now. The gray skies can go away. We need the sunshine.

Cartoons.
Remember when cartoons only came on Saturday mornings? The theme for "George of the Jungle" has been going through my head this morning. My favorite was "Rocky and Bullwinkle" with its sly humor. What was yours?

Now cartoons are on all the time. Thanks to the 4-year-old twins, I'm learning more than I want to know. They seem simplistic, the designs lack the attention to detail of older cartoons. Sometimes, there isn't any dialogue, just grunting as the characters beat up each other. Unfortunately, I can see the appeal to the boys, I had four brothers.

Sale.
On Wednesday, I'm participating in N.N. Light's "Shake Off the Winter Doldrums" event. (No link yet. I'll have one here Wednesday morning.) I'm featuring One Red Shoe, a road trip adventure. I had so much fun writing ORS. even some slapstick comedy with a clumsy assassin wannabe. If you haven't read it yet, now's your chance to get it for 99 cents.

Have a good week, stay warm, and think Spring.

Birthday Celebration with J.Q. Rose #99centSale #review

Join me in celebrating the 1st birthday of my friend J.Q. Rose's memoir. Arranging A Dream. Hard to believe it's been a year since I read the book. At the time, I was very interested in Janet's life before she became a published author. Here's my review from Amazon:

Such an enjoyable read.

The story read so easily. It was like Janet and I were sitting at the kitchen table over cups of tea as she told the story of leaving everything behind for a dream. Her story-telling skills came through as I read spellbound by Janet and Ted's adventure. Their move to the small town in northern Michigan could have been a disaster. How fortunate that they were warmly greeted by fellow business people, neighbors, and church members. But it wasn't all rosy. They had difficulties that threatened their dream. The reader gets a good glimpse into motherhood, too, as Janet balanced working in the floral shop and being a "good" mother. She's honest about her feelings of accomplishments and guilt. If you enjoy reading an entertaining story of pursuing one's dream, you can't go wrong with Arranging A Dream.

BACK OF THE BOOK Arranging a Dream: A Memoir

In 1975, budding entrepreneurs Ted and Janet purchase a floral shop and greenhouses where they plan to grow their dream. Leaving friends and family behind in Illinois and losing the security of two paychecks, they transplant themselves, their one-year-old daughter, and all their belongings to Fremont, Michigan, where they know no one.

Will the retiring business owners nurture Ted and Janet as they struggle to develop a blooming business, or will they desert the inexperienced young couple to wither and die in their new environment?

Most of all, can Ted and Janet grow together as they cultivate a loving marriage, juggle parenting with work, and root a thriving business?

Follow this couple’s inspiring story, filled with the joy and triumphs and the obstacles and failures experienced as they travel along the turbulent path of turning dreams into reality.

Heiress Seeking Perfect Husband by Maris Soule Blog Tour & #Giveaway

Long-time friend and colleague, Maris Soule, is here celebrating her re-release of Heiress Seeking Perfect Husband. As part of her blog tour, she's here to tell us how this story came about.

Maris says:

Looking back over the twenty-five romances I’ve written, I believe Heiress Seeking Perfect Husband is the most comedic. This book was one of the early releases published under Silhouette’s short-lived Yours Truly line. When my editor told me they were starting a new line featuring heroines dating several men before finding Mr. Right, I immediately thought of my own dating experiences. Some were definitely humorous. The men I dated weren’t terrible, not as bad as one of the characters in Heiress, but a short time into the date, I could tell we weren’t a match.

For Heiress Seeking Perfect Husband, I needed a reason why my heroine, Shannon Powell, would be dating one man after another, and a reason why she wouldn’t realize Clint Dawson was her Mr. Right. I also wanted him nearby when she went out with these different men. Making her a young widow and very wealthy would partially fulfill those requirements. He could be her bodyguard. But would my young (in her twenties) widow want another man along when she went out on dates?

I didn’t think so.

But what if she thought he was merely her chauffeur? He might drive her to some of these first dates, and if he didn’t drive, he’d could be around when her dates picked her up. She didn’t need to know he was following her.

Except if she saw him.

Here’s an excerpt from Heiress Seeking Perfect Husband. Shannon is on a date, having dinner with one of her suitors. She thinks she saw Clint standing near the public telephone, but she’s not sure until two women walk by her table and she overhears their conversation.

Read an Excerpt

“Did you see that guy by the telephone?” a young woman passing their table said to the woman with her.
The other woman nodded. “Looked like the bouncer. Did you see the nose?”
Shannon quickly glanced the direction they’d come. She caught a glimpse of a black T-shirt, a broad shoulder and a hairy, muscular arm. Just a glimpse, but she had a feeling she knew exactly who the “bouncer with the nose” was. Pushing back her chair, she stood. “Excuse me, Martin. I need to use the powder room.”
***

Clint knew he had to move and fast. What he needed was superhuman powers. A cloak of invisibility or the ability to cloud minds. What he got was an overweight woman in a flowered dress on her way to the bathroom.
The moment she passed the telephone, Clint stepped forward, slouching so he used her bulk as a camouflage. “What the . . . ?” she said, coming to a full stop before she reached the bathroom door.
He was close enough, he decided, and took off before the woman finished. Not even glancing Shannon’s way, he rushed through the side door to the kitchen . . . and straight into one of the cooks.
Shannon heard the clatter of pots and pans. In front of her stood an overweight woman. The woman was staring at a door at the end of the hallway and whimpering.
“Excuse me,” Shannon said, knowing she could never get by unless the woman moved.
“I . . . I—” The woman looked down at the floor near her feet, then stepped aside.
The moment Shannon pushed open the door to the kitchen, she saw the mess. In front of her a cook was picking up pans and lids, grumbling under his breath. Another looked her way and shook a fist. “Wrong door!” he yelled. “Not for patrons!”

I was sorry to see the Yours Truly line fold. I don’t know if they didn’t have enough writers who wanted to write books of this nature, or if the line didn’t catch on with readers, but I only had two books published with them. Of the two, Heiress Seeking Perfect Husband is my favorite.

The e-book version is on-sale from September 4th – 9th for .99 cents. Pick up a copy if you’d like to read more about Clint’s efforts to protect Shannon without letting her know how he feels about her.

Shannon Powell thinks the interview is over when she mentions that her late husband never wrote her love letters. She isn’t prepared for a headline that says, “Heiress Wants Love Letters.” When the letters start arriving, she decides to answer a few…to even meet some of the men.

Clint Dawson isn’t sure what to do. His title is chauffeur, but Shannon’s late husband actually hired Clint to be her bodyguard. She’s said she doesn’t need a bodyguard and has threatened to fire him if that’s his job, which means he must keep Shannon from seeing him as he follows her on her dates. What’s worse, Clint ends up writing letters for one of the would-be suitors. It’s Cyrano de Bergerac all over again as Clint writes the words he’d love to tell her in person, if he only felt worthy.

About Maris Soule

I love living in a small, rural town

My first twelve years were spent growing up in Walnut Creek, California (when Walnut Creek was still a small town), and I have childhood memories of catching pollywogs in the creek that ran by us, of being able to pick ripe peaches from the trees on our two acres (also almonds, pears, English walnuts, apricots, and more); and sitting in my “thinking” tree making up stories. When I married my husband, I was going to U.C. Santa Barbara, but two years later we decided to move to Michigan. It was supposed to be a short-term move (just a couple years, my husband said). I won’t tell you how many years we’ve now lived in Michigan, but we now have grown children and teenage granddaughters. I haven’t regretted the move. Michigan is a beautiful state, and for 27 years we lived in the rural community of Climax. What a perfect location for a romance writer, and what a neat place to plot a mystery with a lot of suspense. (Yes, there are some similarities between the real Climax and my imaginary Zenith in The Crows, As the Crow Flies, and Eat Crow and Die, but the events and people in those books are definitely fictional.)

I love animals

I fell in love with the Rhodesian Ridgeback the first time I saw one at a dog show. I love their temperament, their intelligence, and their personalities. Over the years I’ve owned several: It seemed natural to use a Ridgeback puppy in my “Crows”books. We’ve also owned hunting dogs (my husband’s), German Shepherds, and now a poodle.

When we lived near Climax, we owned horses and raised (at various times) chickens, ducks, rabbits, pigs, goats, and even one steer. I would say we also owned many cats, but I think they owned us.

I love being near the water

We’ve now moved close to Lake Michigan (so my husband is near his sailboat), and we spend our winters in Florida, not far from the Gulf Coast. Both locations feed my love of being near water (remember that creek I played in and Santa Barbara) and are ideal places to nurture my desire to write.

I love happy (or at least satisfying) endings

Whether I’m writing or reading a romance, a mystery, or a combination of the two, I want a satisfying ending (girl gets guy and/or good guys get bad guys). For my books, I’m probably going to include an animal or two and there’s a good chance the characters will live in the country, the mountains, or near water. I’ve often used Michigan and California as settings, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Florida shows up in a future book.

I’m sometimes asked if the characters in my books are based on me or someone I know. My answer is: Maybe bits and pieces, but my protagonists are always braver and smarter than I am (along with younger) and the antagonists are always nastier than the people I’ve known.

Saturday Sampler - Rogue's Son by Darcy Flynn

Rogue’s Son book blurb:

Tough, driven Kit Kendall has replaced her frills and dresses with no nonsense haircuts and wranglers, years ago. As owner of Sage Brush, the once thriving west Texas bed and breakfast ranch, she now struggles daily to keep her business afloat. Since McCabe Resort Lodge reopened next door as a multi-million dollar hotel, her financial difficulties compound, as she suffers one cancellation after another.

Just when she thought things couldn’t get any worse, Kit’s childhood sweetheart turned nemesis returns as the new owner of the resort that’s now putting her out of business, resurrecting memories she thought she’d buried long ago.

Cowboy, entrepreneur Sam Dawson has returned to Sugar Creek, Texas after six years of exile with a secret that could destroy Kit’s happiness. He left town because of it and for the past two years has secretly tried to make it right. Having failed, he now returns to make one last attempt to undo the tangled web created by his father.

Set in motion by his father’s Last Will and Testament and with the clock ticking, Sam has only weeks to convince Kit to sell him her ranch or reveal the truth that will break her heart.

Excerpt:

Sam could tell she was spitting mad. He watched her jerk the seatbelt over her chest several times before he reached over to click it into place.
He straightened up and glanced at her as he turned into the street. “Is that steam I see coming from your ears?”
Kit responded by snapping her arms across her chest.
He heaved a sigh and shook his head. “She told you, didn’t she?”
Kit didn’t say a word she just stared out the window.
“I’m sorry you had to find out that way. I was going to stop by tonight and tell you myself.”
“How thoughtful of you. So. What do you want?”
“Sorry?”
“For access to the land. Otherwise my guests have no place to hunt or fish.”
“Sell me the road frontage I need.” He’d deliberately forced her hand and hated himself for it. But far better for her to part with a few measly acres than lose everything. And if she ended up hating him in the process then so be it. He cursed both their fathers under his breath.
Kit’s mouth fell open and she slowly turned to face him, hoarse laughter tumbling from her lips.
“You’ve got to be kidding. After this stunt, do you really think I’d sell an inch of my property to you? One Kendall made the mistake of caving to a Dawson’s blackmail, but let me assure you, this one won’t.”
He hated what he was about to do. Hated to force her hand, but she gave him no choice. When did she become so stubborn?

Rogue’s Son is on sale for $0.99 from July 26 - August 2.
