#30 Days of Gratitude - Day 23: Time

We grouse about time. We say we don't have enough of it. Or time got away from me.

I thought with retirement I'd have plenty of time to do the things I've always wanted to do. Yet, the more time I have the more I waste. When time is short, it's amazing what I can get done. I've often wanted a "do over" so I could use time better. How about you?

Maybe I should just be grateful for the time I have.

Here's info about the #30 Days of Gratitude.

It's not too late to join in. Here's the Form: 30 Days of Gratitude 2020 Blog Hop

Time - Where Does It Go #IWSG

It's that time of the month again. No, not that time.  The first Wednesday of the month is Insecure Writers Support Group time. IWSG is the brainchild of Ninja Captain Alex J. Cavanaugh Thanks, Alex, for starting this group and keeping it going. And thanks to this month's awesome hosts M. Pax,  Tracy Jo, Patricia Lynne,  Rachna Chhabria,  Feather Stone, and Randi Lee!

Purpose: To share and encourage. Writers can express doubts and concerns without fear of appearing foolish or weak. Those who have been through the fire can offer assistance and guidance. It’s a safe haven for insecure writers of all kinds!

Is there anything more frustrating than knowing exactly where your story is going and not having the time to write it? That was my dilemma last month. I was so close to the end of my science fiction romance WIP. May was not the month to finish it. If you visited last month, you know I wrote about what sucks away time. That was not the case. I forced myself to refrain from solitaire and mah jong. I didn't watch all my TV shows. And I stayed away from Pinterest.

Confession time: I played a few games at night (when I was brain dead) and I did watch a couple of shows (again while being brain dead). I did stay away from Pinterest, thought. That counts. I had other issues that prevented me from writing.

First, Hubs and I spent two wonderful weeks in Arizona cuddling our new granddaughter. Truly a hardship!   Loved it. I planned on not getting much or any writing done while we were gone. I didn’t realize how flying east messes up your system. Along with laundry, paying bills, etc., getting back to normal ate up another week.

While we were in Arizona my aunt died. Although we couldn’t make it for the funeral, I knew how much my cousin needed support. She was so excited that my sisters and I were coming to visit. So that shot another week. Rereading, that sounds like I begrudged the time. I'm more frustrated than anything.

Non-writers think because we don't have an 8 to 5 job, writing isn't "work" and can be interrupted at any time. Deadlines are deadlines, even the self-imposed ones. I self-publish, but my deadline is every bit as important as a deadline from a publisher. I have my freelance editor lined up and my being late getting the manuscript to her will put her behind. I could even lose my slot on her calendar. All that will delay the publication. I even started setting up promo ops. To fulfill them, the book has to be published.

Yet, how can I disregard family? Maybe I should have told Baby Girl not to come too soon. Or put off visiting my cousin. I know if I don’t go now, there will be other reasons to put it off.

Balancing family and work is difficult no matter what occupation you have. Those of you who have full-time jobs (that pay), plus young families with all that entails, and manage to carve out time to write put me to shame. At times, I feel like such a slacker. My children are grown. I’m retired (from the job that pays), Hubs is understanding, and we’re both fairly healthy. I shouldn’t have any excuse not to write full-time . . . and to meet deadlines. I may be burning a lot of midnight oil.

How do you manage?

BTW, I will be without internet service until tomorrow when I’ll try to visit everyone’s blog. Thanks for understanding.

#IWSG - Time Suck

IWSG is the brainchild of Ninja Captain Alex J. Cavanaugh Thanks, Alex, for starting this group and keeping it going. And thanks to this month's awesome hosts
Eva Solar, Melanie Schulz, Lisa-Buie Collard, and Stephen Tremp!
Purpose: To share and encourage. Writers can express doubts and concerns without fear of appearing foolish or weak. Those who have been through the fire can offer assistance and guidance. It’s a safe haven for insecure writers of all kinds!

What keeps you from writing? Maybe I should back up a moment. Do you have a designated time to write? First thing in the morning before kids/spouse are up, before going off to the job that pays? In the evening? Weekends? Or do you snatch moments whenever you can?

Having a designated time helps keep you disciplined. I’m most productive in the morning. Come evening, I’m brain dead. That’s when I read/answer email, check Facebook, etc. Forget being creative.

Unfortunately, I’m ultra-curious in the morning. I want to check my email. But if I do, time gets away from me and I don’t get to my WIP. Same with Facebook. The worst for me is Pinterest. I hate when Pinterest sends me emails with “pins” they think I might enjoy. If the pin is anything space oriented, I go “shiny.” So I click on the pin that leads to someone’s board and, of course, I have to look at the other pins. Before I know it, a half hour is gone. Time I won’t get back to write.

Another time suck for me is solitaire. Too often when I get stuck on a scene, I’ll start playing solitaire. Mah Jong is worse. I have to force myself not to play until evening. Or I make deals with myself. If I write 3 pages, I can play a game. Instead of concentrating on my WIP, I let myself get distracted.

But when I’m in the groove, when the story is flowing, nothing distracts me. I love when that happens. Just wish it happened more often.

What sucks away at your time?

Insecure Writers Support Group

Why does it feel as if I just wrote last month's post for IWSG? Time keeps flying by. When I was young, I felt as if time just slogged along--unless I was doing something I really liked, of course. These days, it seems as if there's never enough time to do all that I want. I have so many ideas for new books plus several novels that were finished, submitted, and rejected that I like enough to want to do over.

We never know how much time we have. Does that sound morbid? Probably. Last night, I lost another uncle. My dad's generation is quickly passing on. Considering my uncle's age (94), he lived a long life and, until recently, an active life.

About the only thing I can do about my projects is keep writing. Finish a novel, get it published, and move on to the next. This month, many writers are participating in the National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo). The goal is to complete 50,000 in 30 days. I give the people who joined (over a quarter million) a lot of credit for attempting such a project.  Although I've never tried it (and maybe I should so I can be sure what I'm talking about), I don't think NaNo and I are a good fit. I am so OCD that I can't go forward unless I fix something I previously wrote.

I'll keep plugging along, writing at my own pace, and try not to feel like a slacker as my friends write a full novel.
