#IWSG and Alex J. Cavanaugh's New Release CASSADARK

Happy Insecure Writer's Support Group Day. IWSG is the brainchild of Ninja Captain Alex J. Cavanaugh.

Purpose: To share and encourage. Writers can express doubts and concerns without fear of appearing foolish or weak. Those who have been through the fire can offer assistance and guidance. It’s a safe haven for insecure writers of all kinds! Thanks, Alex, for starting this group and keeping it going. We are rockin' the neurotic writing world!

The awesome co-hosts for the April 6 posting of the IWSG are Joylene Nowell Butler, Jemima Pett, Patricia Josephine, Louise - Fundy Blue, and Kim Lajevardi!

Today's optional question has to do with audio books. I have no experience with audio books, so no answer. I'm glad because now I have more room to talk about and with our Ninja Captain Alex J. Cavanaugh and his newest release. Yay!

I've read all the books in his science fiction Cassa series and thoroughly enjoyed them. CassaDark dropped into my iPad yesterday, so I'm looking forward to reading it. I asked Alex why he wrote the Cassa series. Here's what he has to say.

Why a Series? And Why These Stories?

It’s funny because I know a lot of authors who write series. Some of them plan several books before writing. Some are even smart enough to write most of those stories before attempting publication with the first book. And then some of us, well, we just sort of fall into a series.

The first book, CassaStar, was with me for a very long time. I’d written it as a teen and then it sat in a drawer for about thirty years. Of course, when I read it again, it was garbage as far as the writing quality. But the general idea was good. Inspired by the Battlestar Galactica promotional image drawn by Frank Frazetta, the story and characters really stuck with me. Prompted by my wife, I rewrote it, and eventually it became my first published novel.

Dream come true! I wrote a book. Mission accomplished. On to the next thing.

Oh wait, the fans want a sequel?

A sequel? I had no plans to write another book. But there they were, fans and publisher prodding me for another.

So, I dug into my memory and recalled another adventure for my main character I’d never written. One that introduced a new main character. Maybe I could write another story. And in six months, I’d completed and polished the story that would go on to become book two, CassaFire.

I didn’t need any prompting to realize I needed one more. Who ever heard of a series of two books? To finish this, it had to be a trilogy.

I think I had the most fun writing the third story. I used the same formula as I had from book one to book two—jump twenty years ahead. What would be happening in the main character’s life by then? The story and characters fell into place quickly and I produced what I still feel is the best book I ever wrote, CassaStorm.

Trilogy done! Good, because the main character is going to start showing his age soon.

I moved on to another book set in a new world and some short stories. Then I took a break. A really long break…

Interesting how a story will start to poke at you after a while. How an idea will form and the characters take you off on a new adventure. And you realize this is the next story you must write.

Even if it means your trilogy is about to get a fourth book!

The main character had a son, so I jumped ahead a bit and wrote his adventure. That resulted in the latest release in the series, CassaDark.

So, if you ever think your series is done (or maybe you are done!), don’t count on it. Your imagination might have a different idea…

Guest: Jessica E. Subject #NewRelease VAWN #sfr

I'm happy to share in the celebration of my friend Jessica E. Subject's new release.

Hello Diane and visitors! It’s a pleasure to be visiting this blog again to share my new release with you! VAWN is the first book in the Kaddim Brothers series, and a return to sci-fi romance for me. The last sci-fi romance I released was in October 2018 with TAYRYM from my Galactic Defenders series, before devoting my time to writing paranormal romance in the form of my Shifter Towers series. I really enjoyed writing that series, which consists of six stories, and brought to life some of my favorite characters. It was set on an alternate Earth where men who are omegas can get pregnant.

For my new series, I wanted to stick with the ideas of Mpreg and omegaverses, but combine it with other worlds at the same time. So, I decided to write sci-fi romance. This series includes beings from all over the universe, where gender is not binary, and sexuality is far from heteronormative. And they come together for the space racing circuit, which can be thought of as a combination of Formula 1 racing and pod racing in fighter jet-type spacecraft.

Plus, I wanted to go back to writing sci-fi. I had a really great idea that wouldn’t work in any other genre. I wanted to write about space travel, aliens, and people from different worlds falling in love.

I’m sure I’ll go back to writing paranormal worlds in the future here and there, but for now my muse is traveling through space again. I have two more Kaddim Brothers stories to write, and a couple stand-alone stories embedded in my mind already.

Check out VAWN below!

Vawn doesn’t need a mate. He’s already established himself universe-wide as a hot name in fashion, while raising his daughter. But he won’t say no to a fling with a hot space racer when he travels to Eurebly to visit his brothers. One night. That’s all he can give. Because his heart shattered when he lost his previous alpha, and he hasn’t been able to repair it completely. He refuses to love someone like that ever again.

Ojokun survived on Jenegath in order to leave the planet and become the best space racer in the universe. Though he flies with a team, he’s never depended on anyone outside of his jet. He keeps to himself. Has one-night stands, just like every other space racer. But, after a mind-blowing night with the brother of two of his teammates, he can’t stop thinking about the gorgeous omega, or the foreign longing that scares him more than his overly-protective teammates.

Can Ojokun convince Vawn that he wants more than one night? Or is that all they were ever meant to be?

EXCERPT:

“So, what happens if I press this button right here?”

Ret yanked my hand away from the console. “Seriously, Vawn, I don’t know why I let you anywhere near my jet. You won’t stop touching things.”

“Well, sorry for showing some interest.” I rolled my eyes while Genj laughed, standing on the platform below.

Ret shook his head. “You can show interest without using your hands, you know.”

“Darn right I can, but I’m not interested in your jet that way.” I ducked as my oldest brother tried to swat my head.

“How about you get out now?” Ret wrapped his fingers around my wrist. “I don’t need you accidently starting my jet and crashing it into our dormitory. I’d have nothing to fly and nowhere to live because my baby brother couldn’t keep his hands to himself.”

I laughed at him. “You can’t even handle me. How are you going to cope when you have Enif in here for the first time? You promised her, and I can guarantee she will touch and flip everything in this cockpit.”

My brother sighed. “I’ll deal with that when the time comes, but right now, I want you out of my jet. Let’s go to the museum instead.”

“Fine.” I grabbed his wrist with my other hand and made him help me out.

Genj shook his head at the both of us. “It’s unbelievably quiet when you two aren’t together.”

We both turned to him and stuck out our tongues.

After leaving the tarmac, we headed into the main building of the facility. The museum was somewhere inside, and my brothers mentioned all kinds of items they wanted to show me as we walked through the hallways.

While I tried to pay attention, I was completely distracted the moment we walked past the fitness room. But I really couldn’t help myself when the sexiest being alive was chest pressing on the bench with a whole lot of weight on either end of the barbell. There were more modern ways to build muscle now, but him standing inside a machine wouldn’t have given me this breathtaking view. Being from Jenegath, he had black forearms and thighs, his skin changing to blue and reaching toward his torso like the tips of flames. And the golden lines all over the rest of his tanned body proved how vascular he was. All muscle and definitely drool-worthy. I wiped the corner of my mouth as he put the bar in the stand and sat up, catching me staring at him. He winked before he reached for his bottle for a drink. Shit, he was definitely a candidate for tonight. He ran his hand through his dark locks, longer on the top and undercut on the sides. I had to experience him.

Ret peeked over my shoulder. “No.” He spun me around and moved me away from the door. “That is my teammate. Stay away from him.”

“But he’s so hot,” I whined as I was dragged down the hall. “I wonder how hung he is.”

“Not something I want to know,” Genj groaned.

#IWSG: Fall

Happy Insecure Writers Support Group Day.

October shouts Fall loud and clear. It’s my favorite time of year. Crisp days and cool nights, and sometimes fog “creeping in on cat’s feet” – as Carl Sandberg reminds us. And it’s my birthday.

This summer was beastly hot, a rarity to last so long in Michigan. It felt more like winter since I mostly stayed inside our air-conditioner house and ran from the air-conditioner car into air-conditioned stores. I didn’t “feel” like writing. Why did we ever subscribe to Netflix? Binge watch! Consequently, my WIP is still in progress. I wrote so little from May through August I’m ashamed to admit the number of words. In September, I wrote over 3500 words, and the story is finally rolling.

October 2 question - It's been said that the benefits of becoming a writer who does not read is that all your ideas are new and original. Everything you do is an extension of yourself, instead of a mixture of you and another author. On the other hand, how can you expect other people to want your writing, if you don't enjoy reading? What are your thoughts?

I can't imagine not reading. As I wrote last month, I not only binge-watch television, I binge read. It's an escape and a way to keep myself informed in the genres in which I write. For those of us who write science fiction (with or without romance), we need to know the tropes common to our genre plus commonly used terminology. I'm not saying copy other authors, but who wants to come up with a new phrase to describe how a spaceship gets from one part of the galaxy to another? Warp drive, FTL (faster than light) engines, a wormhole. Who needs another term?

Not everyone can make time to read. With only 24 hours in each day, a writer can only squeeze in a day job (aka one that makes money), family, hobbies, volunteering, and writing. What little time is left over is earmarked relaxation. I'm fortunate that I'm retired from the day job. Plus I read before bed. Some nights I read a page or two and have to catch the iPad before it hits the floor. Other nights, I'm so engaged in the story that I'm still reading at 2 am.

Besides reading in my own genres, I belong to a local readers' group. The host for the month's meeting chooses a book from a list the library has on loan for book groups. Not often, the host chooses a book not on the list. (I've been fortunate that they've read a few of my own books.) The books are usually best-sellers, biographies, nonfiction. Rarely are they books I would've chosen to read. That's the great thing about the book group--reading outside my comfort zone.

Reading is essential to good writing. We learn by example.

GUEST: Jean Davis and her #NewRelease TRUST #scifi

My guest today is Jean Davis, my cohort in book events. I've learned more from Jean about setting up book displays and finding occasions where I can offer my books for sale. I'm excited to share her new release. See my review at the bottom of the post. Here's Jean.

Thanks, Diane, for having me on your blog. I'm excited to share my new release, Trust. This is the first book in my new space opera series, The Narvan.

Vayen trains to fight a war that ends before he ever sees action. He's not very happy about it. His family lost their lives to Artor's war with Jal and he'd had his sights returning those loses. Instead, he's stuck in a going nowhere factory security job.

The reason for this peace is a human woman, one Anastassia Kazan, advisor to the Narvan System. Now, years later, she's offering him a job as her bodyguard. His training qualifies him for the duty and all the zeros in the paycheck will offer him the kind of future he'd only dreamt of. If he can gain her favor, he just might have some influence on the lives of his people and those of the damned Jalvians.

But why him?

Anastassia was engaged to his much older brother, the one who died fighting beside her in the war. That he happens to look just like. That she trusted to have her back.

Will she ever see Vayen or is he only the living ghost of his brother?

Excerpt:
She grabbed her glass and gripped it tight. “Killing me isn’t quite that simple. My contacts have their orders should I disappear.”

Her partners had turned on her. But she knew me. She knew my brother. “You have to know I’d never—”

“Save your breath. You all do it eventually.”

My heart dropped. Did she really think I was just another partner waiting to betray her?
A slight slur edged her words. “Quit with the sad face already and get me another drink. While you’re at it, get yourself another too. Enough with nursing that lukewarm thing.”

I found myself in true need of a drink to wash down her accusation.

When I returned to the table, her chair sat closer to mine.

“You need to relax more. Smile once in awhile. Go out and enjoy an off-shift with some friends,” she said.

“I’ll keep that in mind.” I’d given up the few friends I had when I’d hired on. Training and learning all I could to help her filled my off-shift hours. The only person I had left to relax with was Merkief, which we did manage to do from time to time.

While I did sip more avidly at my second drink, I didn’t plan on having another in our current surroundings. “We should get back soon. Jey is already ticked that I took most of his shift.”

“In a while. You need a couple shots first.”

“Jey and I have enough issues without him catching me drunk with you.” Not to mention, getting drunk with my boss screamed bad idea.

Trust : The Narvan (Book 1)
Science Fiction / Space Opera
Released April 2019   •  Published by Caffeinated Press

War has torn Vayen Ta'set's homeworld apart. It took away his parents and then his brother, leaving him alone. He's spent his life training to join the fight, to do his part, to bring peace to Artor. But the war ends before he's able to join in, quietly brought about by a human, Anastassia Kazan. When she offers him a job as her bodyguard, he's sure he's finally found his place. He's wrong. She's not who he thought she was. The peace she brought to Artor, to his entire star system, comes with a cost. One he's now helping her pay. There are bigger enemies out in the known universe than he ever imagined. Without Kazan, deals and truces will crumble. War is just a death away. Neck deep in Kazan’s world of bribes, blackmail, and assassins, Vayen must eliminate the threats to his boss and his homeworld without becoming a target himself. It’s hard to make your mark on the universe if you’re dead.

Diane's Review: 5 Stars

Trust. How much do we trust each other? Do we trust our lover/spouse unconditionally? What about our bosses? Their bosses?

Everybody has secrets, their own agenda. In Jean Davis’s new release, Vayen starts out rather naĂŻve. People are who they say they are. Wrong. He learns the hard way that what people say isn’t always the truth. When Anastassia hires him as her bodyguard, she says it’s to keep the peace in Artor. But is it really? Is it the only reason? That’s where trust comes in.

Anastassia trusted the wrong person once. Now, he’s out to kill her. Can she trust Vayen to protect her?

Fantastic world building and complex characters make Ms. Davis’s story compelling. Just when you think you’ve figured out where the story is going, a twist surprises you. Get ready for an out-of-this-world adventure.

RELEASE DAY! Rescuing Mara's Father is live! #scifi #adventure #Giveaway

RELEASE DAY

My science fiction adventure for middle grade (3rd grade & up) is now available.

3 friends, a hidden starship, a quest

Her father is gone! Taken by the Queen of Compara’s agents. Mara has to rescue him before the Queen tortures and kills him.
Instead of the kind, loving father she’s always known, he’s become demanding, critical, with impossible expectations—not just as Father but also as the only teacher in their frontier outpost. Mara would rather scoop zircan poop than listen to another boring lecture about governments on Central Planets. Give her a starship engine to take apart or, better yet, fly, and she’s happy. Now, he’s gone.
Never mind, they’ve had a rocky road lately.
Never mind, Father promised she could go off planet to Tech Institute next month when she turns fifteen, where she’ll learn to fly starships.
Never mind, she ran away because she’s furious with him because he reneged on that promise. Father is her only parent. She has to save him.

Along with her best friend, eleven-year-old Jako, and his brother 15-year-old Lukus, Mara sets off to find her father. Her mentor, old spaceport mechanic, seems to know why the Queen captured Father. In fact, he seems to know her father well. But, does he tell her everything? Of course not. He dribbles out info like a mush-eating baby. Worse, he indicates he’ll be leaving them soon. And Lukus can’t wait to get off our planet. Mara’s afraid they will all leave, and she’ll be on her own. Despite her fears, Mara has to rescue her father.

GUEST: Susan Kelley #NewRelease - EXILE'S SAVAGE LADY

Please welcome today's guest, Susan Kelley. She appeared over at Paranormal Romantics  last week, and I'm happy to have her here today. When we think about what happens after the Apocalypse, our imaginations can come up with some pretty scary scenarios. Let's see what Susan's imagination came up with.

The Domed City

In my series, Survivors of the Apocalypse, there are two groups of people. The largest group have survived for 300 years inside a sealed city, protected from the outside by a dome. This protected city was constructed as a bio-dome experiment as a prelude to colonizing the moon or Mars. When a pandemic swept the world, the people living inside the dome locked their doors to keep out not only infected people, but also to avoid any contact with anything from the outside.

The experiment became the hope of humanity’s continuation as a species. As the world collapses outside the protected city, the people inside held onto to their belief that a cure would be found. Years passed, generations lived and died, and the sanctuary was now their trap. To go outside the dome was to die.

Harsh methods were needed to preserve life inside the dome. First and most important was birth control. The original population was 25,000 people. When they sealed the doors for good, families were immediately limited to one child. Within a few generations, the numbers of people inside was around 10,000.

Though the city was supposed to be self-supporting, some resources could not be renewed. Even with recycling, certain items would become scarce. Medical treatments would be rationed as would drugs. This item alone would likely decrease lifespans.

The food growing systems would struggled after being in use for 300 years. As each planting was seeded from the previous crop, the plants would lack genetic diversity. The soil was grow poorer even if fertilized with whatever waste the city produced. Food rationing would have been enforced from the start, but as each crop produced less food, the rations would barely stave off starvation. For the young and the older inhabitants, these hardships would be felt even more resulting in higher morbidity rates for those age groups.

Perhaps the most devastating result of a poor diet was on the fertility rate of the women and the health of newborns. Each year, fewer and fewer women are able to conceive. Infant mortality rates skyrocket. Children who live past infancy are small and weak. Decreased fertility has been linked to starvation and a low body fat percentage in many medical studies like this one. There also some research that says these fertility changes can be passed onto offspring.

Even though the population numbers drop well below what the city was designed to maintain, the dwindling resources cannot stretch. The city was never meant to go so long without resupply. The leaders take more drastic measures.

Protocol demands that anyone who becomes ill at all must be quarantined. People start to notice that more and more older people are going missing. Inquiries to the authorities bring explanations of mysterious fevers that have killed those gone missing. Then younger people start to go missing. Children who learning difficulties. Adults who have been injured or have any kind of disability. Some people become suspicious, but the leaders of the city keep a firm hold on their secrets as they reduce population to save the rest.

What has happened to the missing? The leaders don’t want to bloody their hands with murder. They prefer the quiet remote kill. The undesirables or those no longer useful are exiled outside the dome. Once outside, it’s only a matter of hours until they sicken and die.

In my book series, this group of exiles and the outsiders who save them are the heroes and heroines who will search for a way to save not just themselves but the entire human race.

Exile’s Savage Lady: Book #3 of Survivors of the Apocalypse, is the final story in this saga of an America after a pandemic has nearly wiped out mankind. Robin Linden was saved by the Gibbs family when he was exiled from the domed city. He can’t enjoy his new life in the outside while those inside the city are slowly starving. Kerry Gibbs has finally found her match in the strong, quiet city man. When he decides to sneak back into the city and rescue his people, Kerry can’t allow him to go alone. Once inside the decaying metropolis, Kerry realizes the man she’s grown to love intends to save the poor city folks even if it means sacrificing himself. She’s not willing to let him, but the power-hungry city leaders might take the decision out of her hands. Is her love enough to keep Robin at her side? Find this book on Amazon.

Susan Kelley lives in a large, country home in Pennsylvania where she and her husband raised six children. She has been a fulltime writer for years after retiring from teaching high school. This is her nineteenth published romance.

Would you ever agree to live in a biodome for a long period of time as an experiment? If you were in charge, could you think of ways to reduce population that were more humane?

Guest: Jessica E. Subject #PetsinSpace @jsubject

I'm in love with this book, too. Besides being a great anthology of enjoyable stories, I love the charity the authors are sponsoring. More about that later. My friend Jessica E. Subject is here to talk about her contribution to the story.

The Secret History of the
Galactic Defenders

Please Note: 10% of the first months profits go to Hero-Dogs.org. Hero Dogs raises and trains service dogs and places them free of charge with US Veterans to improve quality of life and restore independence. Our donation period ends November 11th 2017 so this is your final days to buy Embrace the Romance and help support Hero-Dogs.org.

Gib and the Tibbar is the story I have included in Embrace the Romance: Pets in Space 2. It is part of my Galactic Defenders series about a multi-race military unit that travels the universe protecting planets and their citizens from the Erebus. Today, I’m going to share the history of how the Galactic Defenders came to be.

The Yarwins are an extremely intelligent race that have been around for tens of thousands of years and live on the planet Yarwa. They are seers as well, but over the years, that ability has dwindled for many of their kind, which serves as conflict in some of the Galactic Defenders stories.

Another ancient race, the Gyoun were afraid of the Yarwins intelligence and abilities. They conducted genetic experiments on their own people to create a being that would guard their planet from the possibility of attack from the Yarwins, a being that could also leave the planet and travel by the power of their sun to Yarwa and attack if the need arose. Unfortunately, these experiments went horribly wrong. The Erebus creature they created ended up killing the entire populations of Gyoun before leaving the planet to attack Yarwa.

The seers saw the attack coming and were prepared. Though, they did lose some of their population. But, they also noticed that they weren’t able to kill all of the Erebus. Some of them leaped from the planet to travel on to another. Knowing what the Erebus were capable of, the Yarwa decided to hunt them down, prevent them from attacking any other planets.

But the Erebus population grew, and the Yarwa needed help. The Yarwa met with many of their trading partners to not only form the Galactic Alliance, but to also recruit help from other planets to create an army of Galactic Defenders whose mission was to hunt down the Erebus and protect the innocent from attack. Now, the Defenders travel to planets that are part of the Alliance as well as planets who aren’t even aware of life beyond their own to protect them from an Erebus attack.

BLURB:

Gib and the Tibbar
A Novella in the Galactic Defenders Series
By Jessica E. Subject

A dedicated Defender to the core, Gib is willing to go to any planet the Galactic Alliance sends him. That is, until he’s sent with his squad to Hemera for their Alorama ceremony, far from any threat of Erebus invasion and with no chance for promotion.

Vilarra has lived on Hemera all her life, working hard in the kitchens of the royal palace until she achieved lead hand. But learning of the universe beyond her world reveals her insignificance and shreds her sense of accomplishment and purpose.

With the help of a furry, little tibbar, Gib is determined to win the affection of Vilarra, prove to her how significant she is to him and the people who depend on her. But will his personal mission be cut short before he has the chance to win her heart?

EXCERPT:

A small, furry white creature scampered between the Defenders and the fire. Gib yanked his feet back and gasped. He tried to follow the path the animal took, and when it disappeared into the grassy field, he relaxed a little. Not that he was afraid, only startled by the sudden appearance of the critter.

But his watch partner reacted differently. The cowardly Defender stood on his bench, reaching for a low branch on the ropral tree as if to lift himself farther off the ground. “What in Gaspra was that? No one told me about any deadly creatures on this planet.”

Gib laughed and slapped his hand on his lap. “I wouldn’t call the fluffy little thing that raced by us a deadly creature.”

“Okay, Hemera is infested with vermin, then.” Zair examined the area around him before he dared put a foot on the ground.

A high-pitched squeak sounded, and Gib’s surveillance partner returned to reaching for the branches. The little creature stood on its hind legs below Zair’s bench, peeping as if telling him off.

Gib couldn’t hold in his laughter. Not just at the other Defender’s reaction, but also the thoughts running through Zair’s mind, thoughts he’d failed to block in his fear.

“It’s not going to eat you.” Gib shook his head, wondering how his squad mate could see the creature as dangerous. “Would you please get down from there? Defenders are supposed to be brave and fierce. Right now, you’re neither.”

“Go to Gaspra, Mingot. And stay out of my head.” He yanked his plazer from his hip holster and aimed it at the critter. “If I don’t destroy it, it will bring death to everyone on this planet.”

Stepping into the line of fire, Gib yanked the weapon from his squad mate, thankful the safety remained on. “You’re being ridiculous. Besides, if you fire your weapon, you’ll cause a panic. The Hemera will think Erebus have arrived.”

The frightened Defender shook a foot at the creature. “Fine, then. Kick it into the fire. Or you could stomp on it.”

“Don’t you dare!” A Hemera woman burst from the bushes, storming toward Zair like a mother rehn protecting her young. She shoved him off his bench and shouldered past Gib before scooping the noisy creature into her hand. “This is my tibbar, not some kind of vermin.”

“Tibbar? Try nasty rodent that tried to eat me.” Zair smoothed out his uniform but kept his distance from the creature now perched on the woman’s shoulder.

“You’re both on nehbred.” She kicked dirt at them, her pink lips pursed and her dark eyes set in a deadly stare. “You don’t know what you’re talking about when it comes to my pet or my planet.”
