 I'm happy to share in the celebration of my friend Jessica E. Subject's new release.

Hello Diane and visitors! It’s a pleasure to be visiting this blog again to share my new release with you! VAWN is the first book in the Kaddim Brothers series, and a return to sci-fi romance for me. The last sci-fi romance I released was in October 2018 with TAYRYM from my Galactic Defenders series, before devoting my time to writing paranormal romance in the form of my Shifter Towers series. I really enjoyed writing that series, which consists of six stories, and brought to life some of my favorite characters. It was set on an alternate Earth where men who are omegas can get pregnant.

For my new series, I wanted to stick with the ideas of Mpreg and omegaverses, but combine it with other worlds at the same time. So, I decided to write sci-fi romance. This series includes beings from all over the universe, where gender is not binary, and sexuality is far from heteronormative. And they come together for the space racing circuit, which can be thought of as a combination of Formula 1 racing and pod racing in fighter jet-type spacecraft.

Plus, I wanted to go back to writing sci-fi. I had a really great idea that wouldn’t work in any other genre. I wanted to write about space travel, aliens, and people from different worlds falling in love.

I’m sure I’ll go back to writing paranormal worlds in the future here and there, but for now my muse is traveling through space again. I have two more Kaddim Brothers stories to write, and a couple stand-alone stories embedded in my mind already.

 “So, what happens if I press this button right here?”

 Ret yanked my hand away from the console. “Seriously, Vawn, I don’t know why I let you anywhere near my jet. You won’t stop touching things.”

 “Well, sorry for showing some interest.” I rolled my eyes while Genj laughed, standing on the platform below.

 Ret shook his head. “You can show interest without using your hands, you know.”

 “Darn right I can, but I’m not interested in your jet that way.” I ducked as my oldest brother tried to swat my head.

 “How about you get out now?” Ret wrapped his fingers around my wrist. “I don’t need you accidently starting my jet and crashing it into our dormitory. I’d have nothing to fly and nowhere to live because my baby brother couldn’t keep his hands to himself.”

 I laughed at him. “You can’t even handle me. How are you going to cope when you have Enif in here for the first time? You promised her, and I can guarantee she will touch and flip everything in this cockpit.”

 My brother sighed. “I’ll deal with that when the time comes, but right now, I want you out of my jet. Let’s go to the museum instead.”

 “Fine.” I grabbed his wrist with my other hand and made him help me out.

 Genj shook his head at the both of us. “It’s unbelievably quiet when you two aren’t together.”

 We both turned to him and stuck out our tongues.

 After leaving the tarmac, we headed into the main building of the facility. The museum was somewhere inside, and my brothers mentioned all kinds of items they wanted to show me as we walked through the hallways.

 While I tried to pay attention, I was completely distracted the moment we walked past the fitness room. But I really couldn’t help myself when the sexiest being alive was chest pressing on the bench with a whole lot of weight on either end of the barbell. There were more modern ways to build muscle now, but him standing inside a machine wouldn’t have given me this breathtaking view. Being from Jenegath, he had black forearms and thighs, his skin changing to blue and reaching toward his torso like the tips of flames. And the golden lines all over the rest of his tanned body proved how vascular he was. All muscle and definitely drool-worthy. I wiped the corner of my mouth as he put the bar in the stand and sat up, catching me staring at him. He winked before he reached for his bottle for a drink. Shit, he was definitely a candidate for tonight. He ran his hand through his dark locks, longer on the top and undercut on the sides. I had to experience him.

 Ret peeked over my shoulder. “No.” He spun me around and moved me away from the door. “That is my teammate. Stay away from him.”

 “But he’s so hot,” I whined as I was dragged down the hall. “I wonder how hung he is.”

 “Not something I want to know,” Genj groaned.

This month's optional question is one I'm happy to answer.

Of all the genres you read and write, which is your favorite to write in and why?

Science Fiction Romance. My first published novel was a sci-fi romance. After being rejected so many times for contemporary romances, I decided to write for fun and, amazingly, Switched was accepted by a niche publisher.

I read and write science fiction because it reinforces my belief in a future. That other sentients live in our universe. That faster-than-light (FTL) speed is/will be possible. That we (humans) will explore other planets, either by traveling through wormholes or developing engines with warp or FTL drive.

Relationships are important to stories. Without characters, the stories would be dry scientific texts. Characters who work together make the story more interesting. Even better, characters who fall in love reinforce my belief that happy ever after is possible. It's a belief in the future of humankind. 

Combining science fiction with a strong relationship (romance) is my favorite genre to write--both for adults and for middle school age children.

When wise-cracking Jessie Wyndom is beamed from her farmhouse in Ann Arbor, MI aboard an Alliance starship, she meets a regular Mr. Spock. Captain Marcus Viator's well-organized life is turned upside down by a free-spirited Terran. Fate brings them together. Treachery tears them apart.

I'm sharing snippets from my science fiction romance, Mission to New Earth. Three teams are about to launch from Titan (Saturn's moon) beyond our solar system on Christmas Day. The mission: to colonize 3 new planets. The narrator, Sara Grenard, is one team's leader. This snippet begins after the celebration (last week).

Marsh sprawled beside me. As usual, he took up three-quarters of the bed—all relaxed, snoring loud enough to wake the dead, the hard planes of his face softened in sleep. He slept like he didn’t have a care in the world, as if he wasn’t going to be crammed into a tube tomorrow and turned into a humongous ice cube for three years.

I, on the other hand, hadn’t even closed my eyes since we turned out the lights—fear slithered through my consciousness, FEAR in capital letters. Despite all the simulations, despite the training, even though I calmly accepted our mission, I was terrified.

Too late to back out now, as if I would.

Excitement and wonder pushed down the fear. I reminded myself that out of the hundreds of thousands of applicants, I was chosen to lead our team on the adventure of a lifetime.

That the people of Earth depended on us.

Earth’s overpopulation and dwindling resources force the United Earth Space Agency to expedite exploration of new planets for a possible new home. When new crises ensue—a giant tsunami and the threat of nuclear winter—the timeline changes. Eight years of training crammed into four. Sara Grenard and her team prepare for launch, but are they ready for the one-way trip? Will the Goldilocks planet prove just right for Earth’s inhabitants? Before time runs out.

         On the evening before our last Christmas in civilization, we celebrated with the other teams, a party that combined Earth’s December celebrations with decorations from Christmas, Chanukah, Kwanzaa, Mawlid an-Nabī, Dhanu Sankranti, Bodhi Day, even Omisoka because none of us would be here for New Year’s Eve, and the secular symbols made sure those who didn’t follow a religion weren’t left out.

I watched my team, as well as the other two, eighteen of us who were to embark on an epic journey—the laughter was a little too loud, the gaiety forced, not aided by alcohol that we couldn’t have—we mingled, chatted about irrelevant topics, but none of us broached the crises on Earth, or our responsibility to save the people.

Yuri and Kaito cornered me near a viewport.

“What do you think, Sara-san?” Kaito’s black eyes twinkled, “Does your team have the Right Stuff?”

I chuckled, “You bet—and yours?”

“But of course.”

Yuri’s belly laugh made me smile, “Neither of you have as great a team as I. We will reach our new home first, even if Sara has a head start.”

“Whoa, my planet is farthest away.”

“Yours is closest, Yuri,” Kaito said, “It is only fair you go last.”

“That means we will get there first,” Yuri smirked.

We were about to leave on an adventure of a lifetime. Giddiness raced through me and with it the ever-present trepidation. Were we prepared for all eventualities? What if—

I had to stop speculating on the dangers of our mission.

Speeding down the corridor, I passed holiday decorations. The festive trimmings brightened the gray walls. I hoped the modules deposited on Serenity had a better paint job. Serenity—our hope for the future of our new planet. After screwing up Earth, humankind had the chance to do it right this time.

The Secret History of the

Galactic Defenders

Gib and the Tibbar is the story I have included in Embrace the Romance: Pets in Space 2. It is part of my Galactic Defenders series about a multi-race military unit that travels the universe protecting planets and their citizens from the Erebus. Today, I’m going to share the history of how the Galactic Defenders came to be.

The Yarwins are an extremely intelligent race that have been around for tens of thousands of years and live on the planet Yarwa. They are seers as well, but over the years, that ability has dwindled for many of their kind, which serves as conflict in some of the Galactic Defenders stories.

Another ancient race, the Gyoun were afraid of the Yarwins intelligence and abilities. They conducted genetic experiments on their own people to create a being that would guard their planet from the possibility of attack from the Yarwins, a being that could also leave the planet and travel by the power of their sun to Yarwa and attack if the need arose. Unfortunately, these experiments went horribly wrong. The Erebus creature they created ended up killing the entire populations of Gyoun before leaving the planet to attack Yarwa.

The seers saw the attack coming and were prepared. Though, they did lose some of their population. But, they also noticed that they weren’t able to kill all of the Erebus. Some of them leaped from the planet to travel on to another. Knowing what the Erebus were capable of, the Yarwa decided to hunt them down, prevent them from attacking any other planets.

But the Erebus population grew, and the Yarwa needed help. The Yarwa met with many of their trading partners to not only form the Galactic Alliance, but to also recruit help from other planets to create an army of Galactic Defenders whose mission was to hunt down the Erebus and protect the innocent from attack. Now, the Defenders travel to planets that are part of the Alliance as well as planets who aren’t even aware of life beyond their own to protect them from an Erebus attack.

A small, furry white creature scampered between the Defenders and the fire. Gib yanked his feet back and gasped. He tried to follow the path the animal took, and when it disappeared into the grassy field, he relaxed a little. Not that he was afraid, only startled by the sudden appearance of the critter.

But his watch partner reacted differently. The cowardly Defender stood on his bench, reaching for a low branch on the ropral tree as if to lift himself farther off the ground. “What in Gaspra was that? No one told me about any deadly creatures on this planet.”

Gib laughed and slapped his hand on his lap. “I wouldn’t call the fluffy little thing that raced by us a deadly creature.”

“Okay, Hemera is infested with vermin, then.” Zair examined the area around him before he dared put a foot on the ground.

A high-pitched squeak sounded, and Gib’s surveillance partner returned to reaching for the branches. The little creature stood on its hind legs below Zair’s bench, peeping as if telling him off.

Gib couldn’t hold in his laughter. Not just at the other Defender’s reaction, but also the thoughts running through Zair’s mind, thoughts he’d failed to block in his fear.

“It’s not going to eat you.” Gib shook his head, wondering how his squad mate could see the creature as dangerous. “Would you please get down from there? Defenders are supposed to be brave and fierce. Right now, you’re neither.”

“Go to Gaspra, Mingot. And stay out of my head.” He yanked his plazer from his hip holster and aimed it at the critter. “If I don’t destroy it, it will bring death to everyone on this planet.”

Stepping into the line of fire, Gib yanked the weapon from his squad mate, thankful the safety remained on. “You’re being ridiculous. Besides, if you fire your weapon, you’ll cause a panic. The Hemera will think Erebus have arrived.”

The frightened Defender shook a foot at the creature. “Fine, then. Kick it into the fire. Or you could stomp on it.”

“Don’t you dare!” A Hemera woman burst from the bushes, storming toward Zair like a mother rehn protecting her young. She shoved him off his bench and shouldered past Gib before scooping the noisy creature into her hand. “This is my tibbar, not some kind of vermin.”

“Tibbar? Try nasty rodent that tried to eat me.” Zair smoothed out his uniform but kept his distance from the creature now perched on the woman’s shoulder.

“You’re both on nehbred.” She kicked dirt at them, her pink lips pursed and her dark eyes set in a deadly stare. “You don’t know what you’re talking about when it comes to my pet or my planet.”
