Nancy Gideon Speaks

Thanks for jumping aboard my RISE BY MOONLIGHT Blog Tour, Diane!
As you and I both know, one of the best things about helming your own writing ship is being able to steer into any genre port you wish. Paranormal, contemporary, suspense . . . wherever the muse leads us. We’ve both navigated through gales and smooth sailing over the years but the ability to chart our own course makes those occasional choppy waters worthwhile. Meeting exciting new characters, learning about unexpected worlds with their own special customs and beliefs has kept the sense of wonder and excitement at the forefront of our paths.

I never expected a course I chose ten years ago to begin an adventure that would sustain my imagination through fifteen books in my “By Moonlight” world! But it did and it has in many wonderful ways. I’ve been able to mix and mingle with a cast of intriguing and somewhat dangerous characters. I’ve been at their sides for heartbreaking and sexy times.  I discovered loyalty and passion and manic revenge that got me up at 4:30 a.m. to capture those emotions while fresh in heart and mind. I’ve met a wonderful host of readers and writers and bloggers who’ve assisted in my travels, giving encouragement and lodging, even if just for the day.  I’ve been able to dig deeper than I thought possible, stretch farther than some thought wise, have had regrets and triumphs, and wouldn’t have missed a moment of it.

But all journey’s end, as Max and Charlotte’s must. But it’s been a helluva ride thanks to friends and supporters like you.

Now, on to that next adventure . . . after lingering just a bit longer in the embrace of my paranormal NOLA family.

Diane's REVIEW
5 Stars

When I read that Rise by Moonlight was available, I was so invested in the previous books I had to one-click it. OMG, this book kept me on the edge of my seat (or bed, since that's where I read) as I explored the end of a 15-book journey. Caveat: you don't have to read the previous books to enjoy this one, but your experience will be greatly enhanced if you have.

Even in all those previous books, the reader doesn't know everything about Max and Charlotte. Each revealed secret made me gasp. Little did I know as I read on that I would be gasping a lot. Their friends (and fellow shifters) the Terriots play a large part in this story. Their trials require Max and Charlotte's assistance, the same way Max and Charlotte need the Terriots'. With a cast of not-quite thousands, you might think you would get mixed up, esp. if you haven't read the other books. Not so. Ms. Gideon gives the reader just enough info about each character. The world building is fantastic--the shifter clans plus the flavor of New Orleans. If you like paranormal romance, you have to read Rise by Moonlight.

Who's For Dinner with Nancy Gideon

Once I got over my first thought of cannibalism (hey, paranormal author!), I fell in love with the idea behind this blog topic. Who would you love to share some table talk with? A celebrity? A great mind? A religious icon?  My choice was immediate and not so grand as that. I’d love to share a meal with the one person who never said anything at the table beyond, “Pass the potatoes.” So Gandhi, Einstein, Jeremy Renner (Wait . . . maybe another time), nah. I’d like to sit down and pass the potatoes one more time with my dad.

My dad was the original strong, silent type, easily confused with John Wayne. He didn’t graduate high school, needing to go to work to help support his family, he carried the morphine in WWII in the Philippines, he grew our vegetables, was a  hunter/fisherman for all seasons with always the right tool for the job whether it be loose table leg or timing belt. He laughed at Bugs Bunny and the old guys in the Muppet Show while pretending to read the paper. The dry sink we built together in the garage has made every one of my moves even though it weighs a ton. He was my hero.

My dad died before he saw my sons, before he knew I’d realized my dream of seeing a book come out in a store where we shopped. He would have hated the idea that I now drive a Honda. And he would have pretended not to like my cats, the way he once did my gerbils. I wouldn’t want to sit down in a noisy, crowded restaurant with him. I’d fire up my grill and toss on a couple of really bad for you steaks, crack a Pabst and cut a slab of pie that we could eat outside with a dog begging underfoot. And I’d make him get beyond those few soft-spoken words to hear him talk about the things that made him a strong man – the Depression, his sister who died young, about how a shy farm boy got up the courage to ask my mom to marry him, about being in the thick of battle so far away from home, about those treasured days sitting out in the garage listening the Detroit Tigers on the radio, and how his love of pulp Western novels, hard boiled PIs and Perry Mason sparked my imagination and led to so many, many more words on the page than we ever shared in a lifetime.  I’d thank him for the food on the table, the roof over my head and the chance to get the education, he himself never had.  I’d show him pictures of his grandson. I loved my dad. I’d tell him that, too. And then I’d pass the potatoes.

I wouldn’t be who I am if he wasn’t who he was. Thanks, Dad. Here’s book Number 60. It doesn’t matter that you wouldn’t read, just that you’d be proud of it.

PRINCE OF HONOR
“House of Terriot” Book 1

The hunter becomes the prey, a prisoner to his own desire . . .

Turow . . .
Strong, silent man of integrity content to serve his new king as a prince in the turbulent shape-shifter House of Terriot. A tracker and relentless hunter, he’s used to running trails alone until charged with returning a traitor to their mountain top home to face the unforgiving judgment of their clan. Isolated with the bad girl he’s loved forever, the choice between duty and desire has never been more difficult . . . or deadly.

Could the bargain made to save their lives become reality?

Sylvia . . .
Manipulative schemer or victim caught between a mother’s ambition and a rogue prince’s lust for power? Trust is almost as foreign as the idea of love, but to save herself from certain death, she must risk both on the good man who deserves them . . . from someone worthy. Trapped by the only one who believes in her goodness, she must betray him and run for her life . . . or stay and destroy him with a long hidden truth.

Deadly, Damaged, and Delicious!

House of Terriot
Brothers too H.o.T. to Handle!

Excerpt from PRINCE OF HONOR:
Heat pounding off his body burned against the backs of her fingers as they bunched the bottom of his tee shirt, shucking it off him with a violent pull. Her palms prowled chest and shoulders, pausing for him to identify each unfamiliar scar.
At his collarbone: “Cale’s lesson on how to use a blade.”
At the glorious swell of a bicep: “Stephen. Bar fight he started and I had to finish.” Probably because he was too drunk, though Turow would never say so.
Across the hard ridge of his abdomen: “Sparring with Rico.”
Tongue dampening her lips, eyes glowing, obviously turned on by the catalog of combat, Sylvia let her fingertip follow a thin line across his left pec as she purred, “And this one?”
“You. Where you broke my heart.”

A Visit from Nancy Gideon

I'm happy to welcome back my friend Nancy Gideon who's been busy, busy, busy this year, re-releasing my favorite vampire, shifter, and just plain romance books. I thought it was high time to pin her down for an interview so here goes.

Write your bio as if it were a tweet (140 characters or less).

Nancy Gideon-Romance by any other name. Historical, series contemporary suspense, paranormal with a horror chaser! Dark heroes, sleepless nights!

Very good, especially the last sentence. What 3 authors who inspire you? Why?

Dean Koontz, Norah Roberts and Cassandra Clare.  Awesome at their craft. They always leave me wanting more!  And soon!

What 3 things have you learned that makes you a better writer?

Persevere, adapt, overcome.  It should be a tattoo.

That's for sure. What was a turning point in your writing career?

So far, it’s been a winding road with sharp curves put together by smooth patches. A wild ride I’ve never regretted taking.

How do you get to know your characters?

I sleep with them first.  Literally.  I mull over scenes and conversations and plot points before drifting off at night until I’m comfortable in their skin. That doesn’t sound perverted or serial killerish, does it?

No, because I do the same. Never thought of it as "sleeping with them" though. LOL

Tell us about your two series—By Moonlight and Touched by Midnight. How did you come up with the series’ names?

“By Moonlight” is a dark paranormal shape-shifter series, now numbering 10 books with the release of UNLEASHED BY SHADOWS. The series follows Max Savoie, leader of an outcast clan in New Orleans, and his unlikely love affair with NOPD detective Charlotte Caissie in the “Moonlight” books and expanded stories regarding strong secondary characters in the “Shadows” books.  All can be read alone, but once you start, you’ll go through them like candy. Sweet, sinful, addictive candy. UNLEASHED BY SHADOWS, the latest book, concerns the new king in a rival clan who endangers his life in an underground Shifter fight club in New Orleans in order to pay a debt that darkens his soul and his queen who is forced to shed her innocence in order to protect him.
“Touched by Midnight” is a vampire romance series that begins in Regency London and follow a cursed family as they elude their enemies and search for a cure through the centuries. Currently, the entire nine book series is being rereleased with all new covers, a book a month, by ImaJinn Books. Book four MIDNIGHT ENCHANTMENT should be rising up at any time.
            Titles? Moonlight/Midnight. Shape-shifters/vampire.  Nuff said.

What are you working on now?

After falling hard for the Terriot princes in UNLEASHED BY SHADOWS, I’m giving them their own novellas in a “House of Terriot Foursome.”  Now, which one to start with?

Now share with us your latest.

UNLEASHED BY SHADOWS

How to protect a prince turned king made pawn?

Burdened by the weight of his secrets and his father’s sins, the need for redemption pulls Cale Terriot from his duty to his clan and the arms of his new mate into deadly intrigues in a rival territory.  His dangerous masquerade in a high-stakes Shifter fight club is about to be exposed to those who would show no mercy – if he can survive in the ring.

Can her love tear him from an unbreakable vow that can only end in death?

Fearing she’s about to lose her soulmate to the darkness he carries inside, Kendra Terriot, newly made queen in the Shape-shifter House of Terriot, must provide him with an heir in order to save his life . . . and his soul.  But first she must risk all to coax him back from the edge of violence inherited with his crown.

“Every delicious word Nancy Gideon puts on the page exhilarates with a sensuous ferocity.   Hopelessly addicted.”
—Darynda Jones,
NY Times Bestselling Author
Diane here:  I totally agree with Darynda. Here's an excerpt.

“You’re in no position to make threats.”

Cale leaned in, not a muscle moving in his face as he vowed through clenched teeth, “You don’t know that. You don’t know me, who I am, what I’ve done, what I’m capable of. I am not weak. I am not desperate or confused. I became king in the House of Terriot on the bones of many, and I am nobody you want to mess with. You have my queen and my sister, and if they are more than mildly inconvenienced before they’re returned to me, you will die the second I learn of it. A Terriot kneels to no one.”

Nancy Gideon is the author of over 58 novels ranging from Regencies, historicals and contemporary suspense to dark paranormal romance, with a couple of horror screenplays thrown into the mix.  When not at the keyboard or working full time as a legal assistant in Southwest Michigan, she can be found feeding her addictions for Netflix and all things fur, feather and fin, enjoying Grammy time (usually watching The Avengers), and meeting new friends and readers through her GoodReads “Nancy Gideon by Moonlight” group. Her books can also be found under the pen names Dana Ransom, Rosalyn West and Lauren Giddings.
