New Release: Against the Wall by Mara Jacobs

I am so happy to welcome my guest Mara Jacobs. I've known here for years. We both belong to the same writing chapter, Mid-Michigan RWA. She is such a talented writer, and I envy her promotion ability. She's sharing her new release with us today. I was so excited when I learned about this new entry in her Anna Dawson series that I pre-ordered the book and read it the same day. Of course, I didn't do anything else that day. LOL I asked Mara to tell us how this series about an addicted gambler came about.

Here's Mara Jacobs.

It’s kind of a funny story how this series came to be…the kernel of it all:

In 2007 I was with my family in Las Vegas cheering on my father as he played in a large World Poker Tour event. He was doing well, and returning each day to continue. As the event got closer to the Final Table, players dwindled, so you ended up seeing the same family and friends of the remaining players each day. My mother and I started sitting with a woman who was the mother of one of the few remaining female players. This player, let’s call her Anna, had come to Vegas a few months earlier right after she turned twenty-one. Her mother told us that Anna left a very prestigious university one semester shy of graduation to come to Vegas and try her hand as a pro poker player.

“How did you handle that?” I asked her mother.

“Not very well,” she replied.

Um, yeah, no. I would guess not.

I looked at the field of players and realized that more than half of them looked to be in their early twenties. Had they all left school early to roll the dice?

That night, once we got back to the apartment my parents were staying in, I started thinking about all the Annas. The buy-in for that tournament was $25,000. How did all those kids get the buy-in money to play? Did they play their way in? (Which is what my father did.) Was their college fund being wagered on the table?

And the biggest question I asked myself—Where are they all going to be in ten years?

And thus, Anna Dawson was born.

My family has been going to Las Vegas for many years, and once my parents retired, they’ve been spending their winters there. I’d visit them a couple of times a year and really fell for the place, so when I became a full-time writer I also became a “snowbird” spending the winters in Las Vegas and the summers in Michigan. It’s been a lot of fun continuing this series now that I live in Las Vegas half the year. Let’s just say I do a lot of “research” on sports betting – ha!

There is some poker in the books, but not a ton, so don’t think that if you don’t like poker you won’t like this series.

The main theme is the family of choice that Anna has surrounded herself with, and her own personal journey. And of course, being a mystery series, there’s a murder to solve.

Excerpt

My head ached as I woke up. Came to, more than woke up. Was that bourbon I drank last night? I didn’t think so. I couldn’t imagine drinking so much of that stuff that I’d get blackout drunk. What I could remember was beer. But I’d never felt like this after a beer-drinking night.
I moved slowly out of the bed, careful of the sleeping body next to me.
Jesus, what happened last night? It wasn’t entirely unexpected that I woke up next to him, but the way the evening had started last night, if I had to have guessed whom I’d wake up next to, my money would have been on the other horse in the race.
It wasn’t unusual for all of us to get a little out of hand, but this? I looked down at my naked body, expecting to see, what? Scars and blood?
But no, it was just my normal body, though it felt so alien to me. And the fact that I was naked was a bit of a surprise too.
I moved off the bed and grabbed his shirt, which was still on the floor. I’d been to his apartment before last night, but never here in the bedroom. The shirt let me know for sure whose bedroom I was in. After buttoning up the long-sleeved white cotton shirt, I gently padded into the bathroom and did my business, then used my finger and some toothpaste to brush my teeth. I spied some Listerine in his medicine cabinet and swished that around a few times, trying to clear my mind as I cleared the foulness from my mouth.
It didn’t work.
It was as if my thoughts were at the back of a foggy tunnel. I could see them, hovering, mocking me, but I couldn’t get to them. They were always slightly out of reach.
I splashed cold water on my face, and it helped a little, but I still couldn’t quite bring my brain into focus.
God, how did a drinker like Jack do mornings like this on the regular? And then get up and go catch murderers? At least when I binged on my particular vice, my head and body were just fine physically. I was just broke. Or in debt. Or paralyzed with shame. Okay, yeah, we all had our cross to bear.
He hadn’t moved from the bed when I left the bathroom. I walked across the room and grabbed my phone from on top of the chest of drawers by the small window. Almost noon? What the hell happened last night?
Not sure if he needed to be woken—I assumed he would have set an alarm if he had—I let him sleep on. Quiet and unmoving, I watched the back of his head, wondering if we hadn’t made a huge mistake last night. How would things play out now?
I took my time getting dressed, not trying to be quiet any longer. If I had to deal with this nightmare of a hangover, so could he.
I pulled back the curtains, letting in the midday Vegas sun. Mistake. I shielded my eyes before my retinas burned off, if that was even possible.
It felt possible. It felt like the sun could melt me where I stood. And like the Wicked Witch, I would shrink to the ground, leaving behind nothing but cargo pants, a Henley, and pockets full of discarded bet slips.
Not just in my pockets, but on the bedside table, too, apparently.
Holding my head in my hands as if it would fall off if I didn’t, I moved back to the bed and sat down on my side, not being careful about landing too softly, though I was more worried about my state of being than waking him up.
Like most people would look for a condom wrapper after a night they couldn’t remember—whether hopefully or regretfully—I was looking at the pile of bet slips that were scattered on the nightstand by where I’d slept.
What the hell had I done last night?
Apparently I’d thought that LeBron was going to have the game of his life if the amount of money—and the number of different bets—on the Cavaliers was any indication.
It was June, and the NBA was deep into playoffs, but I hadn’t bet on any of the games thus far.
Hell, I hadn’t even been following it other than how I’d happen to see it on the front page of the papers. I’d even avoided papers for the most part over the last couple of months.
Had any of these bets won?
Still holding my phone, I clicked on the ESPN app and went to the box score, as I gathered up all the slips and fingered through them. Game winner, over/under, prop bets…Jesus, I’d made over ten different bets on one game.
Then had gotten too drunk to even watch it?
Something wasn’t kosher, as Ben would say.
Mishegoss, Saul would say.
“Hey,” I said, bouncing a little on the bed, my back still to him as I matched up the different bets with the stats I was reading on the phone. “Wake up and tell me what the hell happened last night.”
Nothing from him. Dead to the world. Lucky bastard.
Winners. Every single one of them. I went an astounding ten for ten on bets in last night’s game. That had never happened to me before. Would never again. Simply unheard of.
Even the obscure bet of which team would score the most free throws was a winner.
But why would I have bet on something so stupid?
I very seldom made prop—proposition—bets. Oh, sometimes Lor and I would do the fun ones for big games together, like would a safety be scored in the Super Bowl, or something like that. They were just for fun. Fifty-dollar bets, max.
But the ones I held in my hand were for a shitload of money.
I couldn’t recall how I’d gotten the money to bet them all, but as of this morning I was getting it all back, plus another eighty-six thousand dollars in winnings.
Not bad for a night I couldn’t remember.
What was the saying about God watching over drunks and fools? Add in gambler, and I was the trifecta last night.
“Hey,” I said again, placing my phone on top of the now neatly stacked bet slips, setting them all on the nightstand. “I need to get going. Where did I leave my car?”
I didn’t drive to his place, did I? I wouldn’t be that stupid to drink and drive?
Ha! A glance at the bet slips assured me that my stupidity level was off the charts last night.
I left the bed once more and went to the window, the sun still stabbing into my eyes, but this time I looked down, to the parking lot below his apartment. My Porsche wasn’t there and I sighed in relief. So, not that stupid. I vaguely remembered getting an Uber at some point. From my house? That didn’t make sense. It’d be more likely that I’d gotten one from the Red Rock, where I’d placed the bets.
“I’ve really got to get going,” I said, more loudly this time. Still nothing.
Now I was starting to get pissed. If I had to deal with this massive hangover, he shouldn’t get to skate by and sleep it off.
I turned from the window, a little too quickly, because I had to place a hand on the wall to balance myself. Then the whole room started to spin and I sank to my knees, crawling around the bed to his side.
“What happened last night?” I asked, coming to believe that this was more than just a hangover. Something was seriously wrong with me.
Had I taken something last night without my knowledge?
Faces of college basketball players floated past me, spinning and laughing. Christ, had I been roofied?
“Seriously,” I said, shaking the bed now as I made my way up along his side. I batted at his hand that hung out from the underneath the sheets. “What the hell happened last night? The last I remember was meeting you at Distill.”
Batting at his hand again, I was surprised at how cold it felt. It was late June in Vegas, and though I could feel that the air conditioning was on in his apartment, it was still warm in his bedroom. And he was under the covers, too.
Slowly, I took his hand in mine. The word lifeless came to mind, and though my fuzzy brain was three steps behind, I knew that I meant the word in the literal sense.
Oh, God. Lifeless. Dead.
I pulled myself up to my knees, not wanting to, then pushing the sheet down to see his face. So handsome. I’d thought so since the first time I met him. I placed a hand on his cheek. So cold. His eyes were closed, and I sent up a silent prayer of thanks for that.
I knew it was too late, that he’d been gone for a while, but I pulled down the sheet to bare his chest, thinking I could do CPR while I called for an ambulance.
But once I peeled the sheet lower, I knew CPR would do no good.
There was a bullet hole right through his heart.

New Release: IN TOO DEEP by Mara Jacobs

Blurb:
I didn’t believe in love at first sight, until I first saw Lucas Kade.

I was giving swimming lessons to children when I saw him. Turns out one of the kids was Lucas’s little brother. So, I’d be seeing a lot more of Lucas. And that was just fine with me.

I had a lot going on—a freshman at an elite college, first time away from home, and, oh yeah, roommates with a girl I’d been sent to spy on. I wasn’t exactly looking for anything exclusive. Something casual, though, would be great.

But there was nothing casual about my feelings for Lucas.

He was a townie, hiding a secret, and I knew better than to get involved. I was always the sensible one, the peacekeeper.

Before I knew it…I was In Too Deep.

Excerpt:

I swam laps for an hour. It was longer than what I normally did, and I pushed myself harder. I thought about the studying I should be doing. I thought about my roommates and how we were—finally—starting to gel.
But my mind kept coming back to Lucas. I knew Andy’s last name was Bell from my roster. But that didn’t necessarily mean Lucas had the same last name. In fact, that would be pretty rare with the kids in this program.
Bribury was an elite, Ivy League wannabe school filled with the kids of movers and shakers who didn’t have quite enough moves and shakes to get their kids into Harvard or Yale. It was in a smallish town halfway between Baltimore and DC.
It was idyllic and ivy-covered (see? they’ve got nothing on us; our ivy grows just as thick) and small and exclusive. There was nothing but BMWs, Mercedes, and other sports cars in the student parking lot.
But the town that surrounded Bribury was—in my father’s words—a complete shithole.
Crime, poverty, drugs…the Triple Crown of shitholes.
On campus, we didn’t see it. And if our power-hungry parents had taught us anything, it was to not see what we didn’t want to.
Unless it looked good to do so.
After swimming laps, I walked through the deserted locker room to the far corner and the old-fashioned steam room. I grabbed three of the clean towels from the bench in front, and made my way into the room I’d turned on before lessons.
I loved this steam room. It was like something out of a movie, where, like, the Ukrainian mafia discussed who was going to be “offed” or something.
I peeled out of my suit, wrung it out, and laid it on the lower tile bench. I wrapped one of the towels around me and spread another one out on the top tile bench, then sat on it. Completing the old Ukrainian man vision in my mind, I draped the third towel over my head, with a good third of it dangling in front, almost like a shroud.
Instead of thinking about who needed whacking, I thought again of Lucas. Of how his tall, muscular body moved as he’d walked down the hall toward me. Of how his hair had been so black and smooth once he’d gotten close. Of how I wished he’d gotten even closer.
I wasn’t a total whore, and had only been with one boyfriend in high school, but the sight of Lucas’s broad shoulders in the black polo, and his tight—I mean tight—ass in those jeans… Well, that sight would get even the goodiest goodie-goodie wondering if she could get away with a quick, self-administered relief session right here, in a university steam room.
I didn’t, of course, but God, how my body wanted me to. Exhausted from the laps, further wrung out from the heat and steam, my limbs felt languid and liquid. Like my arms and legs might just blend into the scuzzy old tile that lined the inside of the room.
I lifted my arms to the towel on my head, gently squeezing across my breasts as I did. My legs shifted. I needed to get out of here, take a cold shower. The place was always empty this late into the evening, but still, it wouldn’t do for Lily Spaulding, daughter of Grayson Spaulding, political consultant extraordinaire, to be caught diddling herself in a steam room.
Hmmm…but maybe in the shower?
I rose from the bench, the hard tile having made little dents in my ass and thighs, even through the towel.
I wrapped the towel from my head—not as sweat-and steam-drenched as the towel I’d worn—around my body. I took the other two, and my swimsuit, and left the room, careful to turn the room off at the control panel. Nobody seemed to mind—or notice?—that I was here this late, but leaving a steam room on all night would probably curb that.
I walked out of the room, turned toward my locker, and froze.
Lucas was staring straight at me. He seemed as startled as I was, but recovered faster. A slow—God, so sexy—smile spread across his face.
“I’m here to collect the towels,” he said. Then the smile turned just a little deadly and I wondered if I was about to get whacked by some fictional Ukrainian mafia boss. He nodded at my body, at my hand that clung to my barely closed towel.
“Hand it over.”

Gone With The Wind

Today is my turn on The Roses of Prose blog. Rather than write two blogs, I'll just give you the link and you can read my "brilliant" (LOL) thoughts on the book/movie Gone With the Wind. http://rosesofprose.blogspot.com/2014/06/gone-with-wind-by-diane-burton.html

Come back here tomorrow (Tuesday) for a spotlight on my friend Mara Jacob's newest book. This sounds like another winner for Mara who is a USA Today best selling author.

Something for Fun

TAG, YOU'RE IT . . .

I was tagged by Alicia Dean, author of Soul Seducer, Lady in the Mist, and Thicker Than Water. I love her books, filled with lots of suspense, but I'm not sure whether to thank her for this opportunity or not. LOL

So, here are my answers to Alicia’s questions about my next book…

What is the working title of your book? The Pilot (Outer Rim: Book 1)

Where did the idea come from for the book? – I love space adventure, as you can tell from the Switched series. I see the Outer Rim as comparable to our 19th century Wild West. Like on our frontier, women on the Rim have to be strong enough to make their own way without--sometimes in spite of--men. The Pilot is about cargo hauler, risk taker Celera d'Enfaden who must work with rule-bound administrator Trevarr Jovano to save her brother from an intergalactic mobster.

What genre does your book fall under? Science Fiction Romance.

Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition? All the redheaded actresses I can think of are too tall, but I can see Bryce Dallas Howard as Celera and Jeremy Renner as Trevarr.

Now, it's my turn to tag 5 writers whose work I admire. I'm sure I'll leave out a ton of people out and I'm already feeling guilty! Anyway, here goes…

Mara Jacobs is a new author who writes fabulous mysteries (Broken Wings, Against the Odds, Against the Spread) which keep me reading half the night because I can't put them down.

Jennifer Lowery, another new author (Hard Core) writes romantic suspense with alpha males. Jenny is such a strong supporter of fellow writers she hosts them on her blog Romantic Recipes twice a week.

Christine Warner writes romantic comedy (Some Like it in Handcuffs, Two-Timing the Boss). Her books are laugh out loud funny.

Patricia Kiyono writes sweet romances (The Christmas Phoenix) that tug at your heart.

Nancy Gideon, dear friend for almost 20 years, terrific supporter and fabulous author (Seeker of Shadows and the By Midnight series) who made me an avid reader of vampire and shifter romances.

Now, if you were tagged, grab the questions above – or create your own! – and tag five authors you love…let’s keep it going.

Meet Mara Jacobs

I am so pleased to have you meet a special person. I met Mara Jacobs several years ago when she joined my local RWA chapter. She's always been so friendly and outgoing and I'm glad she's here to tell you about her debut book—no, wait—debut books.

Please welcome Mara Jacobs.

To start off, Mara, please tell us about yourself.

After graduating from Michigan State University with a degree in advertising, I spent several years working at daily newspapers in Advertising sales and production. This certainly prepared me for the world of deadlines! Most authors say they’ve been writing forever. Not so for me. I always had the stories, but they played like movies in my head. Ten years ago I started transferring the movies to pages. Forever a Yooper (someone who hails from Michigan's glorious Upper Peninsula), I now reside in the East Lansing, Michigan, area where I’m better able to root on my Spartans.

I write contemporary romances and romantic mysteries. My indie debut is this month with 3 books out on October 1st, and 2 books on October 22nd.
I’m calling October 1st Release Day Triple Play
1 Debut Author
2 Different Series
3 New Books

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

Ten years ago. I always had the stories in my head, but they were like movies to me. It finally occurred to me to try and get them on paper.

How long does it take you to write a book?

Too long! I had the luxury of no day job when I first started writing and I wrote 2 books that first year. But soon after, I was back in the rat race and that average went way down. In ten years I've completed 6 books and a novella, but I'd like to get back to that 2 a year output.

I'm amazed you've written that much along with a full-time day job. Where do you get your information or ideas for your books?

The 2 different series that are debuting came from very different places. For the Broken Wings series, several years ago I bought a used computer on ebay. When I got it, the previous owner had left all of their personal docs (rĂ©sumĂ©s, pictures, business letters, etc.) on it. I couldn't believe it and mentioned it to someone at work that day. She and her husband made a side-living buying, stripping, refurbishing and reselling computers online and said that it happened all the time to her. She even told stories of the creepy things she'd found.
I wondered about someone who did that all day, combed through other people's personal things. Do they become immune? Do they become engrossed? Obsessed? And thus my character of Blackbird was born. I needed for her to have not much else going on in her life to be so caught up by these machines and so Blackbird has a mysterious past. (don't ya just love those mysterious pasts?)
The impetus for the Anna Dawson's Vegas series is a much more fun story. (Vegas, Baby!) A few years ago, my retired father was playing in a major poker tournament in Las Vegas. It was a several day tournament and my mother and I were there every day to cheer him on. I was astonished at the number of kids (okay, they were at least 21, but they all looked like kids to me!) playing in this tournament that had an entry fee of $25,000. (my father played his way in, winning a tournament at a small casino in the U.P. with a buy-in of $250)
In these situations the gallery is all kind of bunched together so you get to see the same folks everyday. My mom and I made friends with the mother of one of the players. The player was Anna and she'd just turned 21 and moved to Vegas to be a professional poker player. She was one semester shy of graduating from DePaul University. I asked her mother "How did you handle that?" She let out a sigh and said, "Not very well."
There were a lot of stories like hers in that group, and that night I started wondering where all those Annas are going to be in 10 years.
That's how my Anna (Dawson) was born.

That must have been really interesting. What a great way to do research. What do you like to do when you're not writing?

I follow college sports. I have a great circle of friends I hang out with. I like movies, though I find myself watching them more at home lately with the ease of On Demand.

What does your family think of your writing?

I'm single with no kids, so my family in this case is my parents and siblings. I wasn't public about my writing for the first couple of years until I had a handle on whether it was something I wanted to pursue or not. I was actually "outted" by our RWA chapter newsletter that was online. (I turned up in a Google search a family member was doing on another family member!)  After the cat was out of the bag, they've been incredibly supportive. Most of my siblings and their spouses have read all my stuff. My parents have read the romantic mysteries, but not the romances as yet. (not my dad's cup of tea!) And of course my father’s been a great resource for the Vegas books. He and my mother spend the winters there.

How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?

I've completed 6 books and am currently working on my 7th. I think the second Anna Dawson book may be my favorite thus far. In it I dive a little deeper into Anna's compulsive gambling and I always find people's demons interesting. Worth The Weight was probably the "book of my heart", but I found my heart flip-flops.

What do you think makes a good story?

I like character-driven stories. What makes people tick, why they make the choices they do. I know some readers need more plot, and I like plot too, but to me it always starts with the characters.

How do you come up with ideas?

There's always a germ in there somewhere that worms it way into a character. The main character is always the start of the idea for me.

Where do you start when writing? Research, plotting, outline, or...?

Funnily enough I usually write the first scene or two, then jump ahead and write the last few paragraphs. Then I know where my characters begin and end…I just have to get them there.

What did you learn from writing your first book?

That I needed to learn a whole lot more!

Isn't that the truth! I still need to learn more. What two authors would we find you reading when taking a break from your own writing?

Definitely anything by Marian Keyes, but she doesn’t write fast enough! In romance I love a good historical – which is interesting since I’ve never had any desire to write one. Loretta Chase is my go-to for historical romance.

Tell us about your latest book.

I’m actually making my debut with 3 books in 2 different series. These 2 series definitely cross over, which is one of the reasons I’m going indie with them. I got quite a few “we want to buy it, but we don’t know where to shelf it” from editors. They’re both written in 1st person, from the heroines’ point of view, so that breaks the romance rules. They all have a mystery in them which our heroine ends up solving, but there’s also a thriller element given our heroines’ pasts. And there’s an ongoing romance in them as well. I’m calling them romantic mystery series.

Sounds like a great mix. Tell us more about them.

Here's the blurb for Broken Wings:

Like. Comment. Kill.
Online dating? Not quite.

Forced to live in seclusion, her only contact with the outside world is with her online chat buddies. She masquerades behind different screen names with every person except with one: Confessor. To him, and only him, she is Blackbird.

Blackbird makes her living buying and selling used computers online. Though typically immune to the personal contents of the computers she buys, something on her newest acquisition stops her cold: a picture of the man who killed her father years earlier.

As she becomes more obsessed with Nick, the previous owner of the machine, she confides in Confessor. A dead body – Nick’s girlfriend – pulls Blackbird out of her nest and to Tennessee, to find the murderer, and to reclaim her life. Torn between two men, and pining for the mysterious Confessor, Blackbird’s past is revealed as she tries to solve the mystery of Nick’s dead girlfriend, and avenge her father’s murder.

Broken Wings is available:

And the blurb for Against The Odds:

Anna Dawson is a professional poker player. And she’s good. Very good.
She’s also a compulsive sports gambler. Not so good.

When Anna gets in deep to her loan shark, she becomes her alter-ego JoJo and fixes college basketball games to erase her debt. Hey, it’s better than the alternative, which is a drive into the desert with a shovel in the trunk.

When one of Anna’s friends is murdered, and another one shot at, Anna teams up with detective Jack Schiller, a man fighting his own demons.

Anna tries to juggle protecting her friends, helping Jack, and finding a murderer, all without letting anyone learn about JoJo.

Against the Odds is available

Wow. They sound like great stories. One last question, where can readers find you?

At my website - www.marajacobs.com

Thanks so much for being here, Mara. I'm very happy for you on the launch of your debut books.
