#IWSG: World of the Outer Rim

Happy Insecure Writer's Support Group Day. IWSG is the brainchild of Ninja Captain Alex J. Cavanaugh.

Purpose: To share and encourage. Writers can express doubts and concerns without fear of appearing foolish or weak. Those who have been through the fire can offer assistance and guidance. It’s a safe haven for insecure writers of all kinds! Thanks, Alex, for starting this group and keeping it going. We are rockin' the neurotic writing world!

The awesome co-hosts for the July 6 posting of the IWSG are J Lenni Dorner, Janet Alcorn, PJ Colando, Jenni Enzor, and Diane Burton! Me? Wow. I love being called awesome.

June was a terrific month. Thank you to everyone who gave me so much support last time. That's what this group is all about, supporting each other, encouraging those who are having a tough time (like me) and celebrating with those who succeed.

I'm back on the arts & crafts/vendor show circuit. Thanks to some wonderful readers at the White Lake Area Arts & Crafts Festival in Whitehall, MI and at the Lakeshore Arts Festival in Muskegon, I am so pumped about my writing again. Some readers bought books, others said how much they enjoyed my books, and others stopped by to see my tablemate's chicken. Yep, Jean Davis (one of our own IWSG'ers) brings her tame chicken to the shows. That's one way to get people to stop and talk books.

After each weekend, I was exhausted yet energized about my writing. That's a feeling I haven't had in months. I attribute it to the shows, but also to you for your support. Thank you so much.

July 6 question - If you could live in any book world, which one would you choose?

That's easy. I would choose the world in my Outer Rim series, three (almost four) sci-fi adventures. I'd hang out with Celara, Jileena, Rissa, and Genna, strong women on the frontier of space. I admire these fems who carved out their place in a world as harsh and violent as the Wild West of the 1800's United States. Best of all, I'd get to pilot a starship, drive a speeder, and meet the handsome guys who are strong enough to love those enterprising women.

#IWSG - Character Traits

Happy Insecure Writers Support Group Day.

This month's optional question is an easy one to answer.

What personal traits have you written into your character(s)?

Insecurity. My female characters may look like they have it all together. They don’t. They worry about the future, their careers, their relationships, especially with their romantic interest. My own insecurities kick in over what I think of as silly things.

They are also mouthy. Sometimes, my mouth opens before I think about what I should/shouldn’t say. In the stories, the character immediately regrets her smart-aleck remark, and since it’s in her point of view, the reader understands. In real life, I should slap my hand over my mouth but am embarrassed to do so.

In the kickoff to my Outer Rim series, The Pilot, a straight-laced administrator has seized a cargo hauler’s starship. For Celara d’Enfaden, her ship is her home besides being her livelihood. At a bar with her friend, she’s emboldened to denounce Administrator Jovano.

“I ordered a Kruferian mudslide for you.” Kleema gestured with her own tall drink to another on the table.
“Thanks.” Celara let the cold, thick beverage slide down her throat. Its rich sweetness settled in her stomach, spreading tranquility outward. “Just what I needed.”
They chatted for a while, catching up on each other’s lives.
“Administrator Jovano is a good man.” Kleema’s pronouncement came out of nowhere. She must have been biding her time to bring up the Admin Man. “He is fair and just. In the three tendays since he arrived, we haven’t had nearly as many fights break out in the taverns. And the miners don’t hassle us townsfolk as much.”
“President of his fan club, are you, Kleema?” Celara lifted her drink. “Here’s a toast to that paragon Jovano.”
When Kleema had the good grace to blush and duck her head, Celara pushed her chair away from the table and climbed up on it. “Quiet down, you Rimmer scum.”
The patrons laughed then quieted.
She lifted her drink again. “A toast, Rimmers. Let’s hear it for the wonderful, fantabulous Administrator Jovano. May he live long enough to enjoy good health.”
To her surprise, silence met her toast. No one raised their glasses or mugs, even in jest. Everyone was looking at her, standing on the chair.
No, they were looking past her. Only thing behind her was the door. Kleema groaned and buried her head on her folded arms on the table. Booted footsteps rapped on the rough-hewn plank floor then stopped behind her.
“Thank you for the compliments and the good wishes for my longevity.” The baritone-and-chokiris voice sounded just over her shoulder.
If ever she needed a personal cloaking device, it was now. Or a magic ring with which to disappear. Sector Admin Trevarr Jovano stood behind her. Waiting. She swore she could feel him breathing.
Undaunted, she turned around. As the room tipped, she reached for the back of the chair. “Whoa, those mudslides sneak up on you.”
Missing the chair, she grabbed the closest thing—Trevarr Jovano’s black-clad shoulders. Beneath her fingers, the strong muscles contracted. “Hey there, Admin Man. Heard my toast, did you?” She grinned down at him.
He wasn’t smiling. “You should sit down before you fall down. Or better yet, go home and sleep it off.”
A dark fury swept away the sweet tranquility of two tall Kruferian mudslides. “I can’t go home, you snake. You stole my home.”

Celera’s lucky he doesn’t arrest her for mouthing off. And she doesn't quit. If you want to read more, The Pilot is available at:

My characters are also a lot braver than I was in my twenties and thirties. They show me what I could be if those darn insecurities didn’t get in the way.

Have a great month.

#8Sunday - WeWriWa: The Pilot

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warrior and 8 Sentence Sunday time, the weekly hop for everyone who loves to write! Writers share an 8 to 10 sentence snippet. Be sure to visit the other writers. You can find them here.

My snippet today is from The Pilot (An Outer Rim Novel: Book 1). The Outer Rim series is about strong women on the frontier of space. Last week, Celara meets Trevarr for the first time in person. We continue from there. Please forgive all the "saids" and commas used to fit the required length.

“Did you arrive on that hauler?” he said, his voice a tantalizing allure of baritone and chokiris, sounded vaguely familiar.
“Yep that’s my ship,” she said as the tucked her thumbs into the side pockets of her trousers and thrust out her chest a little in pride, “D’Enfaden’s Thermopylae--fastest little transport in three sectors.”
He walked past her to examine her ship then ran his hand—long, strong fingers, she noted—over the dents and scrapes along the aft section and said, “It appears to have sustained damage.”
“My thruster gimbal got damaged when I kissed an asteroid evading filthy pirates, but they didn’t catch me,” she said grinning. “Hey, you new around here?" She raised her hand, palm outward, in the traditional indie greeting, saying, “Celara d’Enfaden and you are . . . "
When he reached into the pocket of his work uniform and pulled out a zircan leather folder, she groaned before he even opened it, knowing what the folder contained--a shiny gold badge, carved with an intricate array of stars, swirls and a tiny red jewel in the center--the insignia of the Coalition. “I am Administrator Trevarr Jovano,” he said, snapping his fingers, bringing two armed Security personnel out of the shadows of the Agilean Speeder. “I am impounding your ship and confiscating your cargo.”

Life on the frontier of space is hard enough for a freighter pilot, so when pirates stole Celara d'Enfaden's cargo, she vowed not to be tricked again. Determined to make an example out of indie pilots who disobey orders, Coalition Administrator Trevarr Jovano impounds Celara’s starship and cargo. If he backs down, he’ll lose respect. If she can’t deliver her cargo, she’ll default on her loan and lose her only home—her ship. More important than her ship, though, is her brother. To rescue him from a galactic gangster, she’ll even work with Trevarr who’s bent on avenging his wife’s murder.

I'm traveling, so I may be late getting to everyone.

Who's For Dinner: Joss Whedon

I’m starting a new feature here. Who’s For Dinner? No, I’m not into cannibalism. LOL On Fridays, my guests will tell who they’d like to have dinner with. The person could be real or fictional, living or dead. It could be a dinner party with many guests or a single person.

photo: IMDB
Since it’s my blog, I’m going first. I’d like to have dinner with Joss Whedon. He’s a screenwriter, director, and producer, most notably for Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, The Avengers: Age of Ultron., Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. And, my all-time favorite, Firefly (TV) and the spin-off movie Serenity. What I didn’t know is that he wrote the screenplay for Toy Story and many other movies and television shows.
photo: IMDB
What would we talk about? I’d ask him why (spoiler alert) he killed off two characters in Serenity. That meant, if he ever brought back the Firefly crew, those two wouldn’t be in it. Unless he did a prequel series. But after fourteen years, I guess that’s not a possibility. For those of you who don’t know about Firefly, the science fiction adventure series lasted only fourteen episodes in 2002-2003 before the network killed the show. Then it became like Star Trek with an avid following.

Firefly’s appeal (to me and I’m sure to others) was the humor. Look how that humor shows up in his other shows and movies. More importantly to me as a writer of science fiction romance was the dichotomy of the worlds. Firefly takes place 500 years in the future with a central government (“civilization”) and on wild Old West-type outer planets. The firefly (a type of transport ship) was crewed by renegades who tried to avoid any contact with the government.

I would thank Mr. Whedon for his inspiration that encouraged the writing of my Outer Rim series. When I began writing The Pilot, my critique partner couldn’t believe I’d never seen Firefly. In fact, she gave me the Serenity DVD so I could see the similarities. Holy cow! I then found the DVD with all the Firefly episodes and I was hooked. Though late to the party, I became an avid follower of not only Firefly but all of his work. He is so creative and versatile.

Not to stay in the past, I’d ask him what’s coming up. Considering how prolific he is, I’d ask how he balances work and family. I will try not to fawn over him, but I’m sure I’ll act like a total Fan Girl and gush.

My Outer Rim series:

The Outer Rim series, standalone books in digital and printer editions, are available at most online retailers.

I hope you’ll come back next week. Patricia Kiyono will be here with her guest.

Portals

Whenever I see the word “portal” I think of a gateway to another time or dimension. How about you? Or do you think of a portal as a doorway? In the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey, I didn’t get the big, black obelisk that kept appearing. It wasn’t until I read Arthur C. Clark’s novelization that I understood it was a portal to another universe.

There’s another meaning for the word Portals. It’s a book. Actually, a book in four volumes. The subtitle is: Gateway to the Worlds of Science Fiction Romance.

Writers are readers and we have the same problem you do. With all the books being published each day, how do you choose what to read next? Forty science fiction romance authors are making it easier for you. We (yes, me too) put a first chapter from our books into a free book called Portals. In each volume, you can read the beginning of ten books plus a little about why the author wrote it. If you like the first chapter, you can click on buy link and—hurray!—you can grab that book and continue reading. Is that cool or what?

There’s more. Portals has its own blog. http://sfrportals.blogspot.com/2016/05/welcome.html

Stop over and read more about the project. If you’d like a chance to be entered into a drawing for two $5 Amazon e-Gift Cards, leave a comment today. May 16th.

Here are some interesting facts about Portals:

1.         It’s FREE
2.         It’s a quick way to find sci-fi romance books
3.         Forty authors; forty 1st chapters
4.         Volume 1 is already available.

Get your free digital copy today. Portals is available at the following vendors.

Portals: Gateway to the Worlds of Science Fiction Romance

I mentioned I’m one of the authors. The first chapter of The Pilot: An Outer Rim Novel is in Volume 2, which will be released on May 31st.

Nancy Gideon's Haunted Open House Blog Hop

http://nancygideon.blogspot.com/p/haunted-open-house.html

Congratulations to Tricia D. for winning a copy of THE PILOT.

Welcome to my friend Nancy Gideon's 5th annual Haunted Open House. Have you gone before? If so, you know it's 5 days of chills, thrills, and treats.

SCARY STUFF

I've made no secret that I do not like scary books, movies, creepy crawlies, and roller coasters. I don't like being scared. If I wanted to be frightened, I'd watch the news. But for Nancy, I'll swallow my fear and talk about scary movies.

I don't seek out scary movies, but sometimes I'll get caught unawares. Like the movie Wait Until Dark. Suzy (Audrey Hepburn) is blind. Three guys are trying to find a heroin-filled doll given to Suzy's husband. If you've seen the movie, you'll understand why the guy opening the refrigerator made me jump out of my skin.

Talk about jumping out of my skin . . . When my kids were 8 and 9, my sister insisted we see the movie Gremlins. She thought it sounded like fun. Hah! That was back in the day before PG-13. My kids spend most of the movie huddled against me or on my lap. That night they asked to sleep in my bed. It sounds silly now, but I was so glad because I knew I'd have nightmares of those creatures jumping out of Christmas trees and from under the bed.

When I tell people I write science fiction, they give me that look, like "you've got to be kidding, I hate sci-fi." So I tell them no creepy aliens. I'd rather write adventure, romance, and humor. No scary stuff. And that's what I call fun.

THE PROTECTOR is the 3rd book in my Outer Rim series. Like the first two, it's about a strong woman on the frontier of space. Also like the other two, THE PROTECTOR is a standalone book. There are recurring characters, but any of the books can be enjoyed without reading the others--although I hope you will.

Blurb:

After tavern owner Rissa Dix rescues two girls from a slave ship, she must rally the townsfolk to prevent traffickers from returning. Mining heir Dillan Rusteran has loved her for years. Little do they know that by rescuing more children they're tangling with a trafficking ring that puts Rissa in danger.

Excerpt:

“To what do I owe this honor?” The pleasure house owner laughed. “Finally going to take me up on my offer to sample my newest provider? He’s absolutely delish. And what stamina.”
Though her cheeks flamed, Rissa brushed aside the offer then quickly explained her need for small clothing.
“Slavers?” Fortuna screwed up her face in disgust. “I heard rumors of disappearances in cities like Rhadaman but not in the colonies.”
“About the clothes?” Rissa needed to return before the girls decided to explore. Or, worse, leave.
Fortuna led her up the back stairs to the sleeping quarters. “SeeMee isn’t working right now. She’s the smallest.”
A few mins later, Rissa had a bundle of clothing from the generous SeeMee who was only too happy to help the escapees. “I chose this life,” the tiny pleasure worker explained. “Nobody should be forced into it.”
And that, Rissa thought, made the difference between pleasure houses and prostis. Choice. She had to make sure those girls bathing in her sanitary could make their own choices.
“The other girl is taller than you,” Rissa said to Fortuna. “About this high.” She leveled her hand near her own shoulder.
Fortuna nodded. “Wait here. Don’t want to interrupt anything.” She grinned.
When she returned to the tavern with the clothes, Rissa found the girls wearing what she’d left them. Her shirt hung almost to Anaris’ ankles. On Pela, it reached her knees. They’d been sitting on her settee, Pela brushing Anaris’ hair. They jumped up when Rissa came in.
Both eyed her warily.
Pela broke the silence. “What are you going to do with us?”
Rissa sat on the end of her bed across from them. “I can find transport so you can return home.”
“No.” Pela’s sharp response surprised her. “I won’t go back.”
Anaris looked even more frightened. “Please don’t,” she whimpered.
With delicate probing, Rissa got their stories. Both girls had been sold by their fathers to the traffickers. Her heart twisted for them. How could a parent not appreciate the gift of life given to them? To sell their flesh and blood was unconscionable.
Rissa reined in her anger. “You have a choice where to go, what to do. Nobody will force you. Now try on these clothes, and when you’re ready come down to the kitchen.”
Pela stood in front of Rissa. “Why are you helping us? What’s in it for you?”
“Repentance.”
