GUEST: J.H. Moncrieff #NewRelease FOREST OF GHOSTS

I'm please to welcome first-time visitor J.H. Moncrieff. I know J.H. from the Insecure Writers Support Group, the monthly blog hop where writers need and give support to each other. A great group of writers. Here's J.H. to tell us about her story.

I’ve walked in Bram Stoker’s shoes.

Not literally, of course, but I can guess how he must have felt when he first cast eyes upon Romania.

Visiting Romania is like venturing into another world. Never before have I experienced a place that looks so much like a fairytale. With its gingerbread architecture, rolling hills, and extravagant roses, it’s easy to picture the Brothers Grimm sitting at one of the outdoor cafés, scribbling away.

Cobblestone streets. Roma women in dresses and kerchiefs selling baskets of raspberries. Rounds of white cheese cured in Christmas trees, of all things, and sold wrapped in the sweet-smelling bark.

Castles in the clouds, their redbrick towers stretching into the sky. Tiny little houses designed for those who feel the need to pray on the go. Even the rubbish bins are picturesque.

I defy any writer to visit Romania and not feel inspired. It’s a place steeped in myth and legend, where some villagers believe in werewolves and vampires, and are afraid of cats. Where peacocks are kept on farms and estates to ward off evil. Where partly built villages stand abandoned, and no one knows why. But there are stories…oh yes, there are always stories.

While setting the latest book in my GhostWriters series in Romania was the choice of my readers, I’d always known I’d write about my experiences there one day. As I’m sure Stoker would have agreed, the country compels you.

J.H. Moncrieff’s new release, Forest of Ghosts, was inspired by her real-life experiences in Romania, including Hoia Baciu, the world’s most haunted forest.

Jackson Stone is sick of ghosts. With his love life in shambles, he heads to Romania for a horror writers’ retreat, hoping it will be a break from the supernatural and breathing space from his relationship with medium Kate Carlsson.

But as his fellow writers begin disappearing or losing their minds, he realizes he needs Kate’s help.

When Jackson loses his own memory, Kate’s love is the only thing that can bring him back. But she’s falling for the man responsible for the evil in Romania. A man who claims to be her soul mate. Will this master of wraiths forever break Kate’s bond with Jackson?

Excerpt
“I met this strange man at the bar last night. He told me some really weird
stuff.”
I paused. When she remained silent, I continued. “He said it was related to my writing.” She watched me with the fascination of one who desperately wanted to look away but couldn’t. As if a deer blinded to the oncoming headlights, she was fixated, trapped. “He said to talk to you.”
I searched her face. I knew my Grams. When resignation settled on her features a knot clenched in my stomach from either fear, or the excitement of validating Gage didn’t fabricate the story. Perhaps he wasn’t crazy.
Grams slowly closed her eyes and opened them again. “He found you?”
            I nodded.
She turned to stare out the frosted window where the birdfeeder sat frozen over from the recent snow. “I can’t believe he took that risk. Watchers are never to approach the Recorders. It could totally upset the balance.” She worried her lower lip between her teeth.
When she used the same terms as Gage, my anxiety elevated. I expected her to deny his claims and then we’d laugh about the incident. “Grams, please tell me. I don’t know what you’re talking about.” I took a deep breath. “Some weird things happened last night. Occasionally I notice unusual things, but it’s an old house and I have an active imagination, but this time it scared me.”

About the Author:
Maureen Bonatch dreamt of becoming a Solid Gold Dancer. When the show ended, she continued dancing in her living room but pursued other dreams. Surviving twins gave her the confidence to learn to belly dance, declare herself a tequila connoisseur, and act as biker babe to her alpha hubby. These adventures, her vivid imagination, and a love of sarcasm help her craft stories full of fun, magic and mayhem.

Maureen lives in small town Pennsylvania and her love of the four seasons —biking, sweat pants, hockey and hibernation—keep her there. While immersed in paranormal romance and fantasy, she survives on caffeine, wine, music and laughter. A feisty Shih Tzu keeps her in line. She enjoys reading & writing—of course! Also bicycling, being a backseat motorcycle babe, watching movies, hockey, wine tasting (usually in her living room where she still dances) and laughing.

Discomforting Thoughts About the Author & Evil Speaks Softly:
·         As a writer who 'writes by the seat of her pants' Maureen’s relentless characters can be demanding in wanting their story told and often have their own agenda. They just aren’t ruthless spirits and there’s no ancient curse…that she’s aware of.
·         The herniated disc Maureen suffered from while writing this story may have leaked a little extra darkness into the tale.
·         Maureen’s first house had a restless spirit.
·         Twins run in Maureen’s family—just no feisty triplets.
·         Maureen has no knowledge of wrestling but she did watch some WWF back in the day for entertainment.
·         Maureen believes she has had sleep paralysis in the past.
·         Nighttime spirits don’t terrify Maureen much since she’s up at the crack of dawn and can barely stay awake after 9:30 p.m.

Meet Author Elizabeth Meyette

I'm so happy to introduce you to my friend and Michigander author Elizabeth Meyette. She is a charming lady, always willing to help fellow writers. Without further ado, let's get to know her.

Welcome, Elizabeth.

Thanks for inviting me to visit with you today, Diane.

Tell us about yourself.

I would love to regale you with tales of my mysterious life in exotic places, but my life has been pretty ordinary. Perhaps that is why my imagination fires with lives of danger and romance—although I do have a wonderful romance in real life with my husband, Rich. Last year, we moved to west Michigan to be near our kids, and near an airport that will transport us to our daughter and grandkids in Texas. We love the beauty of summers in Michigan, but like to get away from the winters for a couple weeks come February. I taught secondary English and journalism with a stint as a media specialist in elementary and middle school. I left my teaching career a few years early to pursue writing full time, and thus, my books were born.

I am a serious chocoholic and must have at least one Dove dark chocolate a day or I get grumpy. I also get grumpy when I’m not writing, and Rich has sent me to my office to write (and cheer up) more than once. He is my biggest supporter. We love to travel and have visited several countries in Europe and have cruised the Caribbean. I love to swim, like to hike, and attempt to golf. And read. I love to read.

Readers can find me at:

How long does it take you to write a book?

Wow. That varies from book to book. My first historical romance, LOVE’S DESTINY, took thirty years from inception to publication because I was teaching and didn’t have time to polish it. Its sequel, LOVE’S COURAGE, probably took only six months to write, I’m sure, in part, because the characters and setting were already established. My mystery, THE CAVANAUGH HOUSE, took about a year. My upcoming book, BURIED SECRETS has been a difficult labor, having taken two years. I am nearing delivery. (breathe, breathe)

What is your work schedule like when you're writing?

My ideal work schedule is to go straight from the breakfast table to my office. I set a timer for 30 minutes so I remember to get up and move around. (If the words are really flowing, sometimes I ignore it.) I like to do yoga and meditate in the morning during one of those breaks. After a little break—back to work. This goes on throughout the day. When I’m drafting a new book, I could work for hours and it would seem like minutes had passed.

Where do you get your information or ideas for your books?

I get ideas from so many places! Recently, I was at a concert, and a new artist, Brennin, was performing one of his songs. Through his lyrics, I got a clear image of a scene to include in EXPOSED, a contemporary romance I’ve been working on. I whipped out my iPhone and started taking notes furiously. Rich thought I was texting LOL.

My idea for THE CAVANAUGH HOUSE came to me unbidden as I was driving through an extremely busy city. Fortunately, I remembered all the images that sparked the story idea and was able to write them out later. LOVE’S DESTINY was conceived after a dare. A friend kept insisting I read romances she enjoyed, but I kept saying romance wasn’t my genre. When I finally gave in and read several Kathleen Woodiwiss novels, I had to admit to myself that I enjoyed them…but not to my friend—I didn’t want her to “win.”! So I said, “These were good, but I could probably write a romance.” She said, “Then do it!” I said, “Okay, I will.” Gulp. So I did, and thirty years later it was published LOL

How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?

My fourth book is BURIED SECRETS and will be available in September 2016. It’s the sequel to THE CAVANAUGH HOUSE. I know you’re not supposed to have a favorite child, but I have to admit THE CAVANAUGH HOUSE is my favorite—so far.

I am currently working on LOVE’S COURAGE, the third book in the LOVE’S DESTINY series. Long before AMC produced the series TuRN, I had planned a historical romance based on George Washington’s citizen spy network. I just wasn’t fast enough LOL.

Where do you start when writing? Research, plotting, outline, or...?

I am a “pantser” so I start with an idea and begin to write. The story unfolds through the lives and interaction of my characters. I research as I go along, usually using only one-tenth of what I research in my book, but knowing I have a solid knowledge basis for the time in which my book takes place. I have tried to outline, but my brain doesn’t work that way because often I don’t see where things are going. It’s like looking up a dark staircase, you can see the bottom steps, but what lurks at the top? I have to climb those steps and discover as I write.

Once I’ve begun the story, I will use Blake Snyder’s Beat Sheet from SAVE THE CAT to ensure my story has a direction and focus. That’s about as structured as I get. During the editing process, I may transpose scenes to tighten the plot or make more sense. As I told my students, writing is a recursive process.

How do you balance a life outside of writing with deadlines and writing muses?

I have to acknowledge my muse, Boris, here. I often feel like a court reporter simply typing out what I see and hear. I read my writing from the previous day aloud before I continue writing, and sometimes as I’m reading, I think, I don’t remember writing that. It truly is a transcendent experience for me.

How do I balance writing and life? Not easily. As I said, I get grumpy when I’m not writing, so if “life” requires a break from writing, I have to make a conscious effort to put aside my desire to write and deal with whatever life is handing out at the moment. It’s like taking off one hat and putting on another—a paradigm shift to what I need to focus on at the moment.

Tell us about your latest release.

BURIED SECRETS is the sequel to THE CAVANAUGH HOUSE, so it is a paranormal mystery set in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York. Jesse is a “ghost empath,” and again, a ghost helps her solve the mystery, putting it in the paranormal realm. The romance between Jesse Graham and Joe Riley that began in THE CAVANAUGH HOUSE continues in the sequel, but with a little competition for Joe. Because Jesse and Joe are separated for part of the book, my editor says it’s more women’s fiction and less romance than THE CAVANAUGH HOUSE. I love the combination of mystery and romance.

Blurb for BURIED SECRETS:

When Jesse Graham almost runs over a “body” in the road one night, she is plunged into a labyrinth of secrets, lies and murder. All Jesse wants is a simple life teaching at St. Bart’s… and a chance at love with Joe Riley. She realizes that plan has been thwarted when puzzling occurrences at St. Bartholomew Academy for Girls get increasingly dangerous. The danger doesn’t just spring from the ghost who haunts the grounds of St. Bart’s, but from a sinister presence that is not ghostly at all. As she digs into the mystery, threats on her life and the life of her student escalate.

Also in danger is her blossoming romance with Joe, owner of the construction company providing upgrades at the school. Jesse’s discovery that she is heir to the Wyndham fortune complicates their relationship. Joe’s resistance to involvement with the Wyndham family, founders of St. Bart’s, threatens to push Jesse into the arms of Scott Stanton, the new equestrian coach.

Which danger threatens her life the most? The ghost haunting her student or the secrets buried in the school?

Alicia Dean: 10 Moments That Changed My Life

A while back, I was on Alicia Dean's blog recounting 10 moments that changed my life. So I thought turn about was fair play for Alicia to tell us her moments. Happy Birthday, Alicia!

Alicia Dean – 10 Moments that Changed my Life

1. July 1, 1961 – My birth in Seminole, Oklahoma – I guess it didn’t really ‘change’ my life, but it started it, so I thought it worth a mention, especially since today is my birthday. Side note, although most people who know me have already been told, I was born the same day and year as Princess Diana.

    2.    Around 1967 – I discovered Elvis. I don’t recall the exact moment that I discovered him, but my younger sister recalls me pointing her out to him when she was 5ish and I was 7ish. So, it was some time before then that he came to my attention. Elvis has been such a huge part of my life for as long as I can remember. Watching his movies and listening to his music has brought me indescribable joy over the years.

    3. Approximately 1970 to 1971 (Can you tell my memory sucks?) - Writing my first story, a romance called “Just Pretend.” In my author bio I mention writing my first romance when I was 11, but while writing this list, it occurred to me that I moved to Missouri when I was 11, and it seems like I wrote the story a while before then. So we’ll say I was 9 or 10. J I might have to amend the bio.

    4.   July of 1972 - Moving to Missouri with my family (my parents and my four siblings). We lived in Oklahoma City and it was during a tumultuous time when the court-ordered ‘Finger Plan’ was implemented which forced students to be bused across the city in order to force desegregation, rather than allowing them to go to school in their own districts. (Not that the schools didn’t ‘allow’ other races to attend, it was just that the different parts of the city were more or less broken up into various races sort of organically) There were riots and fights and the area went downhill quickly. We moved to Missouri to a quaint, lovely, idyllic town. When my parents first told us we were moving, we were devastated to leave our friends. But, in no time at all, we were in love with Missouri and thought we’d landed in paradise. Three months later, our house burned down, and we ended up moving back to OKC, and we were even more devastated to go back than we were to leave.

    5.   August of 1973 or 1974 – I met a group of friends who became my ‘sisters.’ We shared everything – secrets, good times, bad times, we got into trouble together, cried on one another’s shoulders, and grew into womanhood together. While not all of us are still in contact, I will forever treasure those friendships and memories. Among the group was Paige, who became and still is my best friend. She and I have shared even more as the years have gone by and we are about to grow into geriatric-hood together. J I wouldn’t trade a single moment.

    6.   August 16, 1977 – Elvis’ death. I know it’s difficult to understand, considering I didn’t ‘know’ him but Elvis’ death was a tremendous blow. As I mentioned, he was a huge part of my life. I truly felt as though I’d lost a piece of me. He was so young, so gorgeous, so talented. I’d seen him in concert in 1975, 1976, and 1977, and I was looking forward to the time he’d return in 1978, so I could see him for a fourth time, and the year after that, and the year after that… I couldn’t believe he was really gone. I still get emotional about him. Yes, I know, it’s weird. But it is what it is.

    7.  January 13, 1984. Marrying my now ex-husband. (It was a Friday. Yes, I got married on Friday the 13th. Those who know my ‘twisted’ side shouldn’t be surprised.) Although the marriage didn’t last and it was far from perfect, it most definitely had a huge impact on my life. My eldest daughter was two months old when we married, but my other two children were born during the marriage, and I wouldn’t have them had I not married Terry. So…not a total bust. J Plus, we parted amicably and are still friendly.

    8.  November 23, 1983, March 26, 1986, December 11, 1992 – The births of my kids.
Since I have three children (Lana, Lacey, Presley), I thought I would combine these ‘moments’ that changed my life. And, boy, did they ever change my life. I can’t fathom my world without them. They were a joy to raise (although there were difficulties, as anyone who has children or knows children can attest to), but overall, I adored raising them and we made some beautiful memories together that I cherish. They were all so beautiful and smart and funny. (I am NOT biased, I assure you….) J And, we are still close, still hang out together, and I value those moments as well. I am exceedingly blessed!

    9.    December 1994 and April 1995. The death of my father, followed four months later by the death of my husband’s grandmother, ‘NanNan.’ My dad was the most caring, most amazing man in the world, and his death devastated me. He always believed in me and encouraged me. He would have been so thrilled to know I made my dream of being an author come true. NanNan raised my ex-husband and was the only mother-in-law I knew. She was a loving, precious soul whose world revolved around my children. Part of our routine was to go visit her every single weekend. When my son was three, he and I went to check on her one morning after having been at her house the evening before, and we found her dead. I still miss them both.

   10. February 2007 – My first book, Nothing to Fear was published by The Wild Rose Press. I can’t begin to explain what that felt like. Something I’d wanted for as long as I could remember was finally realized. I knew at that point, regardless of whether I ever reached fame and success, writing was my passion and I would never stop. (By the way, the Kindle version of Nothing to Fear is only 99 cents, if you want to check it out. I read sections now and cringe at the writing, but I like the story and it will always hold a special place in my heart) https://www.amazon.com/Nothing-Fear-Alicia-Dean-ebook/dp/B00178YG22/ref=sr_1_21?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1467322187&sr=1-21

I’m sorry, I know I went into too much detail on some…maybe all. But, there you have it. The 10 moments that changed my life. Thank you for allowing me to share on your blog today, Diane!

Pre-Order for only 99 cents! Available July 8, 2016

Blurb:
Amidst a blizzard, paranormal debunker Camille Burditt arrives at Devil’s Promenade in Oklahoma to research a supernatural 'spook light' phenomenon for her latest book. There she encounters a ghostly being, which she dismisses as a figment of her imagination. But as the apparition becomes too persistent to deny, Camille realizes the woman’s ghost is quite real—and that her demise was not accidental.

Declan Rush—the inhospitable, reclusive owner of the inn where Camille is staying—is linked to the deceased woman, but he is less than forthcoming. Despite his unfriendliness, Camille is oddly drawn to him, even though she suspects his connection to the spirit might be that of killer to victim.

When another suspicious death occurs, Camille intensifies her investigation. She has precious little time to ferret out the truth. Not only is her book deadline looming—she's desperate to discover if the man she’s falling for is a murderer.

Meet Author Karilyn Bentley

Author Karilyn Bentley is here today. Let's get to know a little about her and her latest release.

Welcome, Karilyn. Please tell us about yourself.

I'd love to! I'm married to the best husband ever (he puts up with me, after all! Ha!) and we currently share our home with a crazy dog nicknamed The Kraken along with a handful of colorful saltwater fish. My day job is as a clinical research coordinator for a busy oncology practice but in the evenings I'm all about writing the stories of my heart. My website says I write Fantasy with a Touch of Funny, and since you can read it on the internet, it must be true!

How long does it take you to write a book?

Forever! Usually about 9-12 months, but I'm aiming for faster.

What do you like to do when you're not writing?

Read and spend time with my husband. I've also gotten into taking the dog to agility class, which is a lot of fun!

How many books have you written?

I've published two novellas, and 6 novels. I've written a couple more than that, although those books are hiding in a box in the closet. Which is your favorite? My favorite is the Demon Huntress series (Demon Lore and Demon Kissed).

How many hours a day to you spend writing?

Not enough! I go by word count, not hours, so some days I sit for longer than others.

If you could give the younger version of yourself advice what would it be?

The business of writing is way more involved than just writing a book.

If I was a first time reader of your books, which one would you recommend I start with and why?

I have three different series. If you want to read the urban fantasy series, start with Demon Lore, then Demon Kissed (there will eventually be 5 books in the series). If you like dragons, fantasy and romance, try my Draconia Tales series. The order is Magical Lover, Warrior Lover, Dragon Lover and The Detective's Dragon. They can also be read individually. The novellas are part of my werewolf series: Werewolves in London and Wolf Mates. They can be found together in the anthology After the Moon Rises.

What two authors would we find you reading when taking a break from your own writing?

J.R. Ward and J.C. McKenzie.

Tell us about your latest release.

Demon Kissed is my latest release and it's an urban fantasy. It has some romantic elements but definitely isn't a romance. It's the second book in the Demon Huntress series (the first book is Demon Lore).

Demon Kissed by Karilyn Bentley

Blurb:
Gin Crawford, the world's latest demon huntress, has no time to mourn her dead lover as she's called in to determine why a demon attack occurred at the local medical school. And not just any demon, but the one demon that gives her demon-killing bracelet the shivers. A dead professor, a lab full of missing anthrax, and a demon who turns good people into minions complicate her life. Can Gin and her mentor Aidan Smythe solve the mystery of the missing anthrax and the identity of the demon before someone else dies?

Excerpt:
The scent of sulfur hangs in the air like a demonic stink bomb. I want to slap a hand over my nose, but no one else seems affected by the stench. Must be a demon huntress thing.
Justitian,” Smythe mutters. “Not demon huntress.”
“If you don’t like my new title, then stay out of my mind.”
He glares. I swallow. Cross my arms. Refuse to take a step back. I’m learning not to be intimidated by his anger. Go me.
My justitia vibrates, throwing me out of my internal battle, pulling me back to the land of death and minions. The blob of colors pulsates, a glowing reminder of a moment of terror. The moment the demon appeared to the grad student.
Granted, I’m still taking Demons 101, but I thought demons formed minions in private.  Usually after the human committed a crime, not before. A tryout, so to speak. And maybe that happened, but it sure seems to me like the black blob of demon force appeared to the grad student smack in the middle of the hallway.
Or maybe that always happens, and I just now noticed it.
The justitia’s vibration grows stronger, trembling my arm, my veins. Not its normal excited tremor upon seeing a minion or demon. A rush of images spikes through my mind, scenes of terror coupled with blood and death, memories of the justitia’s former wearers captured in time by the entity in the bracelet.
I’m not the only one freaked out by the colored blob. How bad was this demon to scare a justitia?
