#8Sunday #WeWriWa ~ Mission to New Earth

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors, the weekly hop for everyone who loves to write! Writers share an 8 to 10 sentence snippet. Be sure to visit the other writers. You can find them here.

My snippet is from my new sci-fi romance novella MISSION TO NEW EARTH. Last time, many of you asked what happened between Sara and Marsh.

“We need to talk,” Marsh said as he blasted past me toward our quarters.
What? I looked around. Where was the rest of my team? Marsh took an impatient whack at the mistletoe ball hung from a garland. Oh, boy. What had gotten into him?
Bill and Tom trailed behind Marsh with Gloria and Ana bringing up the rear. Like me, they wore forest green jumpsuits, and they did not look pleased. Glum was a better word.
The last simulation wasn’t that bad.

Here's the story

Earth’s overpopulation and dwindling resources force the United Earth Space Agency to expedite exploration of new planets for a possible new home. When new crises ensue—a giant tsunami and the threat of nuclear winter—the timeline changes. Eight years of training crammed into four. Sara Grenard and her team prepare for launch, but are they ready for the one-way trip? Will the Goldilocks planet prove just right for Earth’s inhabitants? Before time runs out.

Who's For Dinner with Elizabeth Meyette

Without Elizabeth Gilbert, I would never have published my first book, Love’s Destiny, so I would definitely invite her to be my dinner guest. My first introduction to Liz, as she calls herself, was her bestselling novel, Eat, Pray, Love, in which she documents her divorce and subsequent search for herself and meaning in her life. This book has empowered many people to take risks in order to lead a life of fulfillment, or what Julia Cameron says is to “leap and the net will appear.” Liz gave me the courage to do just that.

I had written Love’s Destiny years before it was published, but as an English teacher, I never had time to polish it enough to submit for publication. And…okay, I admit it…I was embarrassed to tell people I’d written a romance novel. I’d been teaching THE CLASSICS for goodness sake!

My dear friend, Lisa, made me sit down and watch Elizabeth Gilbert’s TED talk on Creativity. I cried as I listened to her affirm me as a writer…affirm anyone as a creator. Her description of a Divine Attendant Spirit blew me away, and introduced me to my own muse, Boris. You know that surge of adrenaline you feel when someone speaks your truth? Speaks to your heart? That’s what I felt as I sat there and cried. Elizabeth Gilbert gave me the courage to “own” my book—even to be proud I had written it. I retired from teaching early to pursue writing full-time because of the courage she inspired in me.

As I worked on my latest book, Buried Secrets, Liz again inspired me as I read her book, Big Magic. I picked her book up when I was most frustrated with the progress of Buried Secrets. I’d actually abandoned it, putting it up on my closet shelf. Liz talked about once feeling the same way about a book she was writing—she understood exactly what I was experiencing. Big Magic talks about all of us as creators, that is our divine DNA.

Her books are conversational, as if she were sitting across from you over a cup of coffee or a glass of wine. While we were dining, I would ask Liz how she can present the depth of wisdom with such casual, unintimidating ease. And she might have trouble answering that question because she seems so self-effacing, and because her style is so much a part of who she is. I don’t think she could write any other way.

So, Liz helped me worked through my angst about Buried Secrets, and I am happy to say that it is now available for pre-order on Amazon – click to order.

 Buried Secrets blurb:

When Jesse Graham almost runs over a “body” in the road one night, she is plunged into a labyrinth of secrets, lies and murder. All Jesse wants is a simple life teaching at St. Bart’s… and a chance at love with Joe Riley. She realizes that plan has been thwarted when puzzling occurrences at St. Bartholomew Academy for Girls get increasingly dangerous. The danger doesn’t just spring from the ghost who haunts the grounds of St. Bart’s, but from a sinister presence that is not ghostly at all. As she digs into the mystery, threats on her life and the life of her student escalate.
Which danger threatens her life the most? The ghost haunting her student or the secrets buried in the school?

About the Author:
Believer in dreams-come-true and self-confessed chocoholic, Elizabeth Meyette is the author of four novels. Love’s Destiny and Love’s Spirit, are historical romances set in colonial Virginia. The Cavanaugh House and its sequel, Buried Secrets, are mysteries set in 1968 in the Finger Lakes region of New York State.

Before pursuing her writing career full time, Elizabeth taught English, Journalism, Library Science and Technology in Michigan. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in English, a Master of Science degree in Education, and a Master of Arts degree in Library Science, Media and Technology from Central Michigan University. After retiring from teaching, Elizabeth embarked on her writing career full-time and, in addition to her three novels, has published poetry, magazine articles and her blog site, Meyette’s Musings. She says, “I haven’t retired, I’ve refired!” She is currently working on her fifth and sixth novels and three picture books.

Elizabeth and her husband Richard live in Michigan where they enjoy the beauty of the Great Lakes. They have an agreement that she cannot cook on writing days after he endured burnt broccoli and overcooked chicken.  Fortunately, Richard is an excellent cook.

Meet Ella from C.J. Burright's BEAUTIFULLY BURNED

Ten Things Ella Loves About Her V'alkara

Ella is a dreamcaster, which means love can be a little dicey with a normal guy. When a girl can bring nightmares out of her dreams, well, some guys can’t handle the heat. That’s one of the reasons she loves Daxen so much, but it’s not the only one. Here’s Ella, weighing in on what makes her V’alkara so fanflippintabulous.

1. Sure, I can handle my own battles, but there’s no one better than Dax as backup.
2. His sense of humor. He likes all the good stuff like Shakespeare insults and Princess Bride lines.

3. He makes dreams fun. You know, instead of the usual scary.
4. Dax hates clowns as much as I do, maybe more.
5. Dancing with Dax, even with his questionable skills, is magic.
6. He prefers books over skanks. Smart man.
7. Speaking of books, he isn’t afraid to do some heavy research into topics such as seduction.
8. He’ll do anything for his inner circle, including sacrifice himself, which I don’t appreciate. I like my man to stay alive, thank you very much.
9. Even when he’s snarly, he’s adorably sexy.

10. He has the cutest little mole on his…none of your business. Go find your own V’alkara.

Beautifully Burned blurb:

Grandma warned me to resist him.

I know what he is. Even if he doesn't sparkle in the sun, hiss at holy water, or go by the traditional name of vampire, I know.

He doesn't want or need my blood. He wants my dreams...more specifically, my nightmares. And I've got oodles of those, so many they leak.

He's emotionally scarred, growly, dangerous, and kindles all my senses.  Love isn't on his agenda. Having him for a guardian isn't on my list of fun, either. My touch sends him into darkness.

I shouldn't want him.

I can't want him.

But I do.

If I surrender instead of escape, I'll lose everything--my sister, my will, my life. Gran forgot to tell me the most important detail of all: how am I supposed to resist him when he's everything I've ever dreamed of?

Beautifully Burned is told in dual, third person and may be read as a stand alone.

Excerpt

Five steps from her truck, Ella skidded to a stop. The sexy, sober book lover leaned against the fence a few yards away, as if he’d been there the whole time.

Her heart somersaulted twice. She might be tired, her thoughts preoccupied, but no way had he been there a second ago. Frick. He didn’t look like the type who scared easily and her nearest neighbor was two blocks away, so screaming would be pointless. With those long legs, he’d probably won some track medals, which nixed running for it. Her best bet was to get into her truck, lock the doors, and take off. Chin lifted high, she finished the short trek to her getaway wagon.

“I must speak with you.” Whether ordering a Shirley Temple or making soft, unexpected demands in a midnight parking lot, his gravelly voice was seductive as sin.

Her nerves tightened and she steadied her hands enough to jam the key in the lock. “Look, it’s late, I’m tired, and you decimated my maraschino cherry supply. Time to go home.”

He pushed off the fence and ambled toward her.

Ella struggled to turn the ancient lock. Stupid rust. “Bartender counselor sessions are closed until tomorrow. Sorry.”

“I have questions for you.” He leaned his hip near the tailgate, too close. “They won’t take long.”

“Oh, you’re a collection agent.” Thank God her voice remained cool and steady enough for the pretense. The truck lock finally gave with a loud snap. “Check’s in the mail.”

“I’m interested in your dreams, not your finances.”

A tremor coasted her spine and she paused, fingers wrapped around the door handle. No way was his dream comment random, but the press to escape dimmed beneath the desire to hear him out, to see if someone in the wide weird world had helpful information about her curse. A little chitchat never hurt anyone, and if he tried anything shady, she knew how to handle him. Her special self-defense was always ready.

She sucked in a breath. Without knowing when or how, he had moved closer, so close she had to crane her neck to look into his face. He smelled faintly of campfire smoke, a fond reminder of the frequent overnight hiking trips she used to take with Gran and Ginny. Back then, fire had made her feel warm and safe.

“A moment. Please.” He planted a hand on the door, keeping it shut and boxing her halfway with his arm. His ‘please’ sounded more like an attempt at manners than a request.

Curiosity warred with concern. If he wanted to attack her, he could’ve already sliced her, diced her, and left her for the stray dogs to gnaw on. What did he want to talk about? What words had the man who lured her mother away used? She wasn’t a mindless sheep, no matter how beautiful the wolf may be, but there was no denying this man did something witchy to her blood. She wanted to know why. Maybe that would set her questions to rest, ease her guilt, cure her curse.

But Ginny depended on her. She had to play it safe and get rid of him.

Ella shifted and rested her back against the truck door. He didn’t move, and a secret thrill coiled in her stomach. Ignoring it, she netted all her emotions and observations, pushed them to the back of her mind, and focused on his blue sea eyes.

“Go home,” she said in the hushed, haunting persuasion voice she used on drunks and perverts. “Forget me. Forget Dany’s exists. Never come here again.”

He went utterly still.

A bewildering stab of loss staked her chest. She’d never see him again. He’d go back to his life and she’d return to hers, no harm done, no questions answered. For some insane reason, she wanted to curl up on the asphalt and have a long, hard sob-fest.

A tiny crease formed between his black eyebrows, and instead of obeying, he studied her with a scientist’s concentration. “Are you trying to compel me?” His voice was gently accusing. He leaned nearer. “I’m V’alkara. I can’t be compelled.”

Ella leaned hard on the cool frame of her truck. Compel was a good explanation for her uncanny persuasion powers, and if he recognized it, getting rid of him would be harder than she thought. “Who are you?”

“Daxen v’al Solanis.” He watched her, unblinking.

“And V’alkara?” She swallowed the sawdust in her throat. Was that another word for vampire? “What’s that?”

“Me.” His small smile made a snarling wolf look friendly. “Ready to talk now?”

“You had all night to talk to me.”

“I wanted you alone.”

A fire bell warning clanged in her head, a command to escape, yet she couldn’t peel her attention from his jaw. Stubble shadowed the hard angles, a darkness contrary to his pale neck. She had a sharp, nearly overwhelming urge to touch him there, to experience the disparity of prickly and smooth, to slide her fingers down his throat to the ridge of his collarbone.

Ella blinked rapidly and gripped the keys tight, breaking the spell. “Are you trying some hypnotic woo-woo on me? Not cool. Kindly remove your hand from my truck.”

He cocked his head and his eyes flashed. “Don’t you want help with your nightmares, Ella?”

#IWSG: Old Dog, New Tricks

It's that time again. The 1st Wednesday of the month is Insecure Writers Support Group, the brainchild Ninja Captain Alex J. Cavanaugh Thanks, Alex, for starting this group and keeping it going. And thanks to this month's awesome hosts:   C. Lee McKenzie,Rachel Pattison, Elizabeth Seckman, Stephanie Faris, Lori L MacLaughlin, and Elsie Amata!

We're also announcing the details of the annual IWSG Anthology Contest on September 7!

Old Dog, New Tricks

our old dog Cody
When I retired from my day job, I thought I’d have lots of time to write. Just write for fun. I’d pretty much given up on getting published until a writer friend asked why I didn’t self-publish Switched, my first (and at the time, only) published book to which I had the rights returned. Thus began my learning new tricks.

Holy cow! Did I ever have a lot to learn! I wasn’t even on Facebook. Had no idea what Twitter was. A blog? Huh? Since 2011, I’ve learned so much, thanks to the wonderful writing community. Besides my RWA chapter (Mid-Michigan RWA) members, Authors Helping Authors (an online support group), the Science Fiction Romance Brigade, this group, and so many more helped me learn what I needed to know.

After five years learning new things, I learned a couple of new things this past month. I put my new release up on Amazon for pre-order. I’d heard the horror tales about how if you don’t put the completed book up by their deadline, you can’t do a pre-order for a year. Pretty tough rule. Mine was up well before the deadline. I also discovered Smashwords and Kobo have pre-orders. I’ll definitely do those, too, next time.

My other learning something new? This weekend, I put three of my books up at All Romance eBooks. Friends have long mentioned this venue as another place to have my books available. I almost gave up. The website is somewhat confusing to navigate. Once I figured it out, the rest was fairly easy. I’m glad I pursued this.

As long as I keep learning, I won’t let my brain atrophy from disuse.

This month’s question: How do you find the time to write in your busy day?

Good question. I have a supportive spouse who leaves me alone (most of the time), who cooks when he sees I’m really involved in my writing, and who does laundry. I am so lucky. But I tend to waste time, too, so I’m looking forward to reading what others have to say.

My newest sci-fi romance (the one that was up for pre-order) was released on August 31. Mission to New Earth (a novella) is available at:

Labor Day

Today we (in the U.S.) celebrate the worker. In my day jobs, I was never management, always the worker. My volunteer life with Girl Scouts was another story. Frankly, I liked being a worker bee better.

Retirement is supposed to mean no more work. Yeah, right. Life goes on, and the "jobs" at home continue--cooking, cleaning, laundry, yardwork. I'm fortunate that Hubs (also retired) shares many of the household jobs. Retirement also meant for me more time to write.

I've always treated writing as a job. Fortunately, it's a job I love. Giving form to ideas/dreams, bringing characters to life, going on adventures with those characters (vicariously), falling in love for the first time. What's not to like?

I'll keep writing as long as my mind lets me. I watched my mom slowly lose hers to Alzheimer's. If there's a worse way to go, I don't know it. And it's a fear. Although Mom's was probably due to age, I fear Alzheimer's or any form of dementia. My doctor gave me some good news, though. My writing will (in all probability) keep dementia at bay.

So work is good. I celebrate Labor Day because I can still work.

This week, my work takes me to different (virtual) places. I'll be visiting writer friends' blogs with interviews, articles, and teasers from my new sci-fi romance, Mission to New Earth. Here's my schedule:

Tuesday, Sept 6: Gina Conkle  a teaser
                                 Veronica Scott  "Goldilocks" planets
Wednesday, Sept 7: M.J. Schiller  Meet Marsh Rayburn
Friday, Sept 9: Barbara Edwards  Why I Wrote Mission to New Earth

I hope you'll join us. You'll have more opportunities to enter the Giveaway.

Now I'm off to write blog posts for next week. A writer's job is never done.

#SFRBrigade Showcase ~ MISSION TO NEW EARTH by Diane Burton

The SFR Brigade Showcase is the chance for our Science Fiction Romance authors to showcase excerpts from their latest releases, snippets from a work-in-progress, a new cover for their book or just have fun with something silly, like a character interview!

I've been flying high this week with the release of my sci-fi romance novella, Mission to New Earth.

Would you go on a one-way trip to explore a new planet? Would you do it to save humankind?

Earth’s overpopulation and dwindling resources force the United Earth Space Agency to expedite exploration of new planets for a possible new home. When new crises ensue—a giant tsunami and the threat of nuclear winter—the timeline changes. Eight years of training crammed into four. Sara Grenard and her team prepare for launch, but are they ready for the one-way trip? Will the Goldilocks planet prove just right for Earth’s inhabitants? Before time runs out.

Excerpt

Then only Marsh and I were left.
I strolled up to the man I loved and put my arms around his waist. When I rested my head on his chest, I heard the thud of his heart. Normally, a reassuring sound that always made me go weak in the knees, it beat more rapidly than usual. He was still agitated.
“Hey, guy. Everything will be all right. We’re ready. More than ready.”
“I know. It’s just—”
Leaning back in his arms, I reached up and patted his cheek. “Settle down, big boy. I think Bill and Ana have the right idea. From Gloria’s blush, she and Tom do, too.” I gave him a long kiss. At first, he didn’t respond—still worked up over the latest simulation. Then he gave in, as I knew he would. Not to be smug, but Marsh did like my kisses.

His kiss turned hard, demanding, as he strained to maintain control. I wanted him that much, too. But not on the tile floor in the lav. The shower had possibilities. When he eyed the enclosure, I knew he was thinking the same thing. Too bad I had other obligations. That was me, duty first. I could be such a stick-in-the-mud.

Check out my blog to see where I am on my blog tour and enter a giveway for an Amazon GC.

Be sure to return to the SFR Brigade Showcase page to find more authors.

Meet Author Veronica Scott

I am so happy to have a special guest here today. Veronica Scott is one of my all-time favorite science fiction romance authors. Her books take me away to unknown worlds with characters I'd love to spend more time with.

Welcome, Veronica. Tell us about yourself.

I’ve always written, even since I was about seven and penned a long, self-illustrated epic about a princess with flying cats, flying horses, many sisters and a riverboat captain boyfriend. I grew up in a house with a library as its heart. Dad loved science fiction, Mom loved ancient history and I clearly thought there needed to be more romance in everything. I had a long career at NASA/JPL in the business side of things and received a NASA Exceptional Service Medal for process improvements along the way. But now I’m fortunate to be a full time author. I also write the SciFi Encounters column for the USA Today Happily Ever After blog, which lets me do fun things. A big thrill for me this year was to read the part of Star Trek Crew Member in the audiobook production of Harlan Ellison’s “City On the Edge of Forever.” I’m a Red Shirt who survives! I write science fiction romance and ancient Egyptian fantasy romance.

A Red Shirt who survives? You lucky duck! Tell our readers where they can find you? (social media, etc.)

How long does it take you to write a book?

I write very fast – well, when not spending too much time on social media! – so I can finish a book in about two months, depending on the length. Then the editing process can take as much as another two months.

You are a fast writer. Where do you get your information or ideas for your books?

Anything can and does spark my imagination. Sometimes just one photograph can give me the idea for an entire book. Other times, I’ve maybe always been fascinated with a topic, like the sinking of the Titanic, and eventually the science fiction twists on the event come to me and I write a novel inspired by reality. I read voraciously too, both fiction and nonfiction, and magazines galore. I’ve found a few good plot ideas in Business Week!

I get the reference to the Titantic. Loved Wreck of the Nebula Dream. What do you like to do when you're not writing?

I read, watch movies or TV, take walks, build Lego sets with my grandson…

My grandson could play with Legos for hours! What does your family think of your writing?

My family is extremely supportive and happy for me that I’m published and writing fulltime. One of my daughters is in fact also a published author.

That is so cool. Like Mother, Like Daughter. What do you think makes a good story?

Characters the reader can care about and root for, adventure and romance!

Definitely agree there. What is the best part of writing for you?

I love sharing my stories with readers and there’s nothing better than hearing from someone that they’ve enjoyed one of my books, or that I “got it right” with a certain plot element.

What do you enjoy most about writing?

I just get into the ‘flow’ as athletes say, and the words come easily. I’m excited to get to my laptop and work on a scene – I know it’s all going really well when the first thing on my mind when I wake up in the morning is a plot twist or a new angle on something I wrote the day before.

What a great feeling. Where do you start when writing? Research, plotting, outline, or...?

I usually know the two main characters, the beginning and the ending, and a few key scenes. I start writing at the beginning of the story and the other details and scenes fill themselves in along the way. Total seat of the pants person! I do a LOT of research, especially for the ancient Egyptian stories, but usually I’ll go look up what I need to know when I arrive at that part of the Work In Progress. For my newest release, I did a lot of research on various ritual ball games played by the ancient peoples of Central and South America, as an example.

Omigosh, someone who writes like I do. LOL If I was a first time reader of your books (which I'm not, btw), which one would you recommend I start with and why?

That’s hard because I love them all! For the Egyptian fantasies, maybe Ghost of the Nile, because it’s a good example of how I like to blend reality and the ancient Egyptian gods into an adventure, with romance of course! It’s also a Finalist in the 2016 RONE Awards contest. For the scifi romance, Star Cruise Outbreak has recently Finalled in a contest where the first round judges were genre-specific book clubs, so I thought that was quite a vote of confidence

Star Cruise Outbreak was great. What two authors would we find you reading when taking a break from your own writing?

Nalini Singh because I love her books and all her series! I’m a huge fangirl. For the second author, I’m always on the lookout for new scifi romance and fantasy, so I try to keep a pretty hefty To Be Read list and work through it. I’ve been reading the Fallen Empire series by Lindsay Buroker.

Nalini Singh is a terrific author. I've not read Ms. Buroker's work. I'll have to check her out.

Tell us about your latest release. My latest release is Trapped on Talonque, a science fiction romance.

Here’s the story:

Will an alien sleeping beauty awaken to save him, or destroy everyone around her?

When a Sectors Special Forces soldier and his team crash land on an alien planet, they’re taken captive and given a challenge–win at the violent ball game of sapiche and live. Lose, and they die, sending a mysterious, alien beauty to an even uglier fate. To survive, these soldiers must win the game and find a way to free the dangerous prisoner from her locked chamber.

Nate Reilly and his team are in deep trouble. Prisoners on a backward alien planet, they’re brought before an alien ‘goddess’, sleeping in her high tech seclusion. Nate is astonished when she awakes and establishes a psychic link with him. But her news is not good–he and his men must win a brutal challenge set by their captors, or they will die. She’ll give her aid, but in the end their courage and strength must win the contest.

Bithia sleeps in her chamber, as she has for thousands of years, since her own people unaccountably left her there. Viewed as a goddess by her captors, she must hide her ancient secrets to survive. But only the bravest of men may free her. Can she use her psychic powers to keep Nate and his men alive long enough to help her escape, or will her only hope of freedom die with them?

The excerpt:

He stood wreathed in gray-green mists coiling around him like the ghosts of snakes before falling away to reveal the mysterious subterranean room deep under the palace. He faced the sleeping woman. Nate descended the three stairs and walked across the chamber until he stubbed his toe against an invisible but potent barrier. Trying to reach through or past this obstacle, Nate saw his hands outlined in pale green light. He shoved harder. If he could just reach her, wake her, ask her a few pointed questions… As if sensing his efforts, she moved her head on the mattress and opened her eyes, revealing dark lavender irises flecked with gold.
“I am sorry,” she said, clear as day, in Basic.
But no, Nate realized, he heard the words in his mind, not with his ears. Her lips moved, but not to shape the syllables he heard.
“Sarbordon thinks you and I are of the same people. Therefore, what he wants lies outside your power to provide,” she said, as if the piece of confusing information would help him navigate the perilous situation.
“Why are you sorry?” Nate stayed with her first words to him. “You’ve done nothing to harm us.”
“I pity anyone trapped here on this cursed planet. The king will sacrifice you to his hungry gods when you don’t produce the miracles he expects. Demands. I—I didn’t tell him the truth when he asked.” Brow furrowed, she studied Nate’s face. Biting her lower lip, she said, “Honesty on my part would have brought instant death for you. He believes you’re my father’s warriors, come to rescue me, so I agreed with his conclusion. I said you were also sent to retrieve certain possessions. He’s desperate to acquire the marvels my father wielded. My deception may give you time, perhaps a chance to save yourselves.” She studied him from head to toe, and her lips curved into a slight smile. “You have the attitude of a warrior, one able to survive. You must play the game.” After a moment, she averted her gaze, but Nate still heard her next words. “Sarbordon will bring you here again if you earn the privilege. If you can survive to that point, I may have a plan, a chance for you to seize freedom. I can’t promise.”
He was woozy, possibly an aftereffect of the wine with dinner. Maybe the drink had been laced with a primitive drug. His powers of concentration were affected, and frustration with his uncharacteristic lack of focus built. “What’s your name?”
This vision he was having was dangerously fascinating, and he wished it were real. No one had ever even seen a representation of a living Ancient Observer, much less conversed with one. He accepted Haranda’s educated assessment that she wasn’t a member of the mysterious race of galactic forerunners from a million years ago, but the way her chamber was encapsulated deep in the palace, as if the building had grown organically to house her, spoke of centuries, if not millennia, passing since she was placed in her high-tech prison. The equipment must have kept her alive, but why was she here in the first place?
The incongruity of trying to solve her puzzle while his life and the lives of his men hung in the balance made him shake his head. This was one hell of a dream, built on his fascination with her earlier in the day.
“We’re not dreaming.” Seizing on his unspoken thought, she denied his conclusion scornfully, staring at him with wide-eyed contempt. “I dream only of death. We’re communicating. Perhaps your people are too primitive for the concept, fallen from the sky or not.”

Thanks for coming, Veronica. Best wishes on Trapped on Talonque. It's on my Kindle and next up to read.
