#WeWriWa - ROMANCE REKINDLED: Grandma's in Jail

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors where authors share an 8 - 10 sentence snippet. Be sure to visit the other authors. You can find them here.

Considering the heat wave hitting most of the U.S., I thought you might like to read something cool--temperature-wise. If you find it "cool" figuratively, I'll be happy. This snippet is from my Christmas story, ROMANCE REKINDLED, which is on sale this weekend for 99 cents.

To orient you to this snippet: Abby, the main character, got a middle-of-the-night phone call from the police. Bethany is her teenage daughter.

Please excuse the creative punctuation, necessary to keep this within the guidelines.

Abby wrestled with the wind as she tried to open the back door—Bethany helped and together they got it open then closed and latched tight. The same wind cut through her winter coat as she slogged through a snowdrift. Dang, I should have worn socks. And boots. Snow and wind froze her feet before she could get into her van parked behind the store. Though it was convenient to live above her shop, on nights like this, she would love to have an attached garage. Snow blowing in from the south had drifted against her vehicle. By the time she got inside, her wet pant legs clung to her calves. She gritted her teeth against the icy-cold that filled her clogs.
Bethany jumped into the passenger’s side, stomping her boots to knock off the snow. “Now, you can tell me why Gram is in jail.”

GUEST: Katherine Gilbert - Protecting the Dead #urbanfantasy

Please welcome my guest, Katherine Gilbert. She's here to share her new release, Protecting the Dead, an urban fantasy.

Let me tell you about the inspiration for Protecting the Dead. It's set in and around Decatur, Georgia, one of the many suburbs of Atlanta. It shouldn't be an odd area, but it is. Oh, it is.
To give you a few examples of the strange things which no one in the area questions, one of the neighborhoods is called Druid Hills, and there (at least used to be) a statue in the Buckhead area called, "The Storyteller," which is clearly Herne the Hunter reading to an audience of various animals. I once also saw a brochure for an antiques shop which had, as one of its treasures, a decorative pin which looked like a hand of glory. These are only small tastes of its many oddities.
It only made sense, then, to set an urban fantasy there, in a fictional version of the apartment complex my sister and I visited which told us about their tenants, "Oh, our residents never leave." Given the not-quite-alone feeling we had gotten in the apartment, we could much too easily believe it. Here's an excerpt:

She knew she was being rude, certainly wasn’t being a good assistant to Geoffrey, but couldn’t quite force herself to look up again. If she did, she was going to see things she couldn’t wholly deny. She couldn’t take that. Whatever its dangers, denial felt safe. If only life could be all picket fences and well-tended lawns and SUVs and…
Okay, so she really wasn’t dumb enough to think such details meant an utter lack of misery, but they just seemed so nice, compared to her life. She felt someone sit on the couch beside her, knew it was Geoffrey, even before he spoke.
“Give her a minute,” he whispered, tenderly stroking her blue hair.
One of the residents sighed softly. “I guess we are a bit much for a first day. Especially with our moon phase coming up and all.”
She wished she lived the sort of life which made it impossible to guess what they were talking about.
Geoffrey’s soft touch made her raise her head again, her eyes a little misty, as she gazed at the two werewolves’ worried yellow eyes. Their normal clothing only made the situation weirder. The one who had greeted them, Hugh, dressed much like her boss tended to. The second one was even wearing a business suit. She was trying not to scream.
Fortunately, Geoffrey surprised her out of the impulse, pulling her close, his arms tender, mouth by her ear. Into it, he whispered a series of soft, soothing sounds. Like at her lunch with Glory, none of them were quite recognizable, except for her name. “Lydia,” he would breathe, before those only half-hidden words began again. “Lydia.” It made her real name so darn tempting that she couldn’t quite remember why she’d ever chosen another, and it finally made her sanity begin to piece itself slowly back together. She felt his soft kiss against her ear, before he finally leaned back. She didn’t really know what to think, after that.

Protecting the Dead

by Katherine Gilbert

Blurb:
After a childhood filled with demons and her devil-worshiping parents, Lydia longs for a quiet, normal life, a safe haven somewhere blissfully dull. Being the manager at the Roanoke Apartments seems to fit that bill. But Lydia soon learns that you can't leave the past behind so easily. She finds herself faced with unclogging drains for werewolves, conducting nightly vampire counseling sessions, and caring for two talkative cats. Then there's the distraction of Geoffrey, the hottest, and most angelic, boss anyone ever dreamed of.  As if that isn't enough, the demon who nearly killed her shows up to finish the job. So much for a peaceful, simple life...

GUEST: Constance Bretes JADE'S REDEMPTION #Sale #99cents

My guest today is a long-time friend. We met when she lived in Michigan, and we belonged to the same RWA chapter. I'm so pleased that her writing career has taken off the way it has. She's here to share some really good news. Her book, Jade's Redemption is on sale for only 99 cents. Wow. What a bargain. Here's Connie to tell us more.

Thank you so much, Diane, for having me on your blog today. When I write my stories, I tend to write something in them that has happened to me in real life. In Jade’s Redemption, there was no exception.  The incident in the botanical garden was a true incident that happened to me when I visited Tizur Gardens in Jefferson City, Montana. It was not so funny at the time it happened, but when we got back to the motel. My husband and I had a good laugh about it, and then when I told my story to my co-worker, it got around the office, and even my sister took no pity on me and laughed her a$$ off.

What was the incident you ask? Well, you have to read the book to find out about it. But it was my favorite scene to write because I still laugh about it, to this day.

I came up with the title for this book after realizing that what I wrote was about a young woman who made a terrible mistake, and her journey back from the abyss she threw herself into as a result of that mistake. In the end, she had redeemed herself.

For the month of August, 2018. This book is on sale at all retail outlets for 99 cents.

Jade’s Redemption

He's an overworked police chief, and she's a disgraced cop. Can he rescue her from her own depths of hell without losing his heart to her in the process?

Someone is kidnapping newborn infants and selling them to the highest bidder. Police Chief Patrick Carter has his hands full investigating the case. To complicate matters, he's short on staff.

Jade Harlowe has secrets, ones that she vowed no one would ever know. She used to be a police officer, but when a tragedy occurred—one that everyone held her responsible for—she resigned and moved to another state to start over, accepting a job as a dispatcher for the police, fire, and ambulance departments.

When Patrick discovers Jade's past police experience he offers her a job on the force. He needs help working the kidnapping cases, and Jade previously solved a similar case, so she could be a valuable asset. But will they be able to fight the attraction that's sizzling between them? Something that could be very distracting if they can't control it.

The clock is ticking. They have to find those babies and prevent more from being taken. But a very nosy news reporter may compromise everything if she digs deep enough to uncover Jade's past.

Neither Patrick nor Jade thought they had room for each other in their lives, but working so closely together makes it impossible to deny the chemistry. Can Patrick break through the wall Jade has built up around her, or will her past finally catch up with her and she loses everything once again?

Excerpt

When Jade arrived at the police station that morning, she saw that Patrick’s vehicle was already there. Why was he in the office so early?

She scanned her ID to get into the communication call room. She acknowledged the two dispatchers still on duty, then grabbed her mug and went to the break room. After pouring herself a cup of coffee, she headed back. On her way, she greeted two officers and walked by Patrick’s opened office door.

“Jade, in my office. I need to talk to you,” Patrick said.

“Okay.” She didn’t report to him, so why did he want to see her? She entered his office.

“Close the door,” he commanded, his voice terse.

She closed the door and sat in the chair in front of his desk.

“There was another kidnapping last night. Here’s the file on both kidnappings and files from other known cases to cross-reference. I need you to investigate the cases and try to get these babies back and prevent another one from being taken. I want you to go out into the street, ask questions, get in people’s faces, and help solve this crime.”

“Um, not an officer, Patrick.”

“You are now. If you’ll stand, I’ll swear you in.” He opened the desk drawer to get the book out.

“You can’t make me an officer, just like that.”

“Yes, I can. I know you were an officer in Oklahoma City, and I know your credentials are up-to-date. You are certified and ready to be an officer. All I need to do is swear you in.”

“You checked up on me?” Jade asked, her voice faltering.

“No, at first, I called the Oklahoma City Police to find out about the kidnapping case you mentioned. In the course of my discussion with the chief, I asked if he knew you, which he said he did.”

“Then you know what happened there.”

“No, they couldn’t tell me due to your non-disclosure stipulation.”

“Then you shouldn’t hire me.”

“I’m giving you an opportunity here. This is your chance to prove yourself. You are given full range to investigate the cases. You’ll report back to me every day as part of your training. I will guide you to where and how to solve this crime and many others. Now, are you up to it and ready to start?”

“But…Patrick…um…Chief. This is so sudden. I...” She was speechless, she didn’t want to do an investigation into a possible kidnapping. She didn’t want to handle cases that involved children. How could she get out of this? Did she really want to get out of this?

“Say yes so we can get started.”

“You sure about this?” She wasn’t, but she couldn’t tell him no. This was the kind of once-in-a-lifetime opportunity you didn’t turn down. It felt strange though; he never talked this fast, and he wanted her decision now.

“Yes, I’m sure. So, what do you say?”

“Chief, I’m not sure this is a good idea.”

“Why not?”

What could she tell him? “I’ve been away from police work a long time, and I’ve never been a detective. I was only in training to be one.”

“Your previous employer said that you were showing signs of being a good detective. Jade, I need a detective. I need fresh eyes, someone quick to analyze the situation and get to the bottom of this. I’m offering you a chance to prove you are the right person to do the job. Anyone else would jump at the opportunity. Why are you hesitating?”

“I…um...” She couldn’t tell him she didn’t want to work baby or children cases. You couldn’t be selective when you were a detective. You took all jobs, no matter how difficult or painful it was.

“Have you talked to the fire chief? Does he know?”

“Yes. I talked to him this morning. He’s going to hire someone to replace you.”

“What about the police commissioners?”

“I’ll deal with them.”

She stared at Patrick and swallowed a big lump in the back of her throat. A detective? Her heart hammered hard in her chest. Could she do it? If he knew her past, why would he even consider her for the job? Talk about a bombshell dropping. Couldn’t she have time to consider it?

But a little glimmer of hope sparked in her heart. So there was a chance for her to redeem herself? She’d be stupid to turn down the opportunity. “Okay. I’ll do the best I can.”

“Good.” Patrick stood up, pulled out a Bible, and said, “Place your hand on this and repeat after me.”

After she was sworn in, they sat back down and Patrick went over the second kidnapping with her and handed her the files.

“I want you to work with Clyde on this, as he’s been doing the legwork. Between this case, the first case, and a murder case, he’s been pulling double duty trying to handle everything. But before you go out anywhere, you check in with me and let me know what you and Clyde are doing.”

She wished she could say she’d do the murder case. “It looks like this second baby was taken the same way. The two cases are likely related. Did you have any evidence that we can use?”

“So far, no. CSI went to the second scene this morning to gather any trace evidence there, but we won’t know anything for a couple of days. When you investigated the case in Oklahoma City, how did you crack it?”

“I posed as a woman wanting to adopt a baby.”

“How did you know who to connect with?”

“It was a long shot. I started with the kidnapped baby’s mother, then it went to a person who knew a person who knew a person. Then I created an identity of a woman desperate to adopt. I made sure I stayed visible and willing to try anything to get a baby.”

“I see.”

Jade rose, walked to the door, and put her hand on the doorknob, but before opening it, she turned to him. “Are you sure you want me to do this?”

Patrick leaned back in his chair and stared at her as if he was reflecting on something.

“Yes, I’m sure. There are a lot of things we need to discuss. But right now I need you to get on board with Clyde, quickly, and start working this case while it’s still hot.”

“Okay. Where do you want me to work?”

“The next room down the hall is the detectives’ squad room.” He gestured with his thumb. “Grab whatever desk and computer you want. Stop by the lock-up room and get Mike to assign you a gun.”

The case was the opportunity of a lifetime for her. It gave her the chance to prove to herself, to Patrick, and the whole world, that she could do the job. Would solving this help make up for the child whose life was taken because of what she did?

She took a deep breath, opened the door, and headed to the lock-up room. She had walked into the station today as a nine-one-one dispatcher, and was now walking out as a detective.

#WeWriWa - NUMBERS NEVER LIE: A Successful Camp-out

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors where authors share an 8 - 10 sentence snippet. Be sure to visit the other authors. You can find them here.

This is the last snippet from my new release NUMBERS NEVER LIE, a romantic suspense. Maggie, Drew, and the girls have returned from the weekend camping trip. One of the dads approaches Drew.

Please excuse the creative punctuation, necessary to keep this within the guidelines.

“Another successful camp-out?” Mike Randolph asked Drew, “Gretchen sure does like them, and it’s been good for her—she used to be such a bookworm.”
“Da-ad,” Gretchen protested.
Drew had seen Mike in the neighborhood—he was a runner—but hadn’t connected him with Gretchen, “Yes,” Drew said, “We had a great time.”
“I was surprised to hear they roped you into helping,” Mike went on, “Wouldn’t catch me eating bugs and berries.”
“But, Dad—” Gretchen began.
Drew cut her off, “You’d be surprised how tasty grasshoppers and slugs taste cooked over a campfire—almost like chicken,” Drew managed to keep a straight face especially when Gretchen dissolved into giggles.
“Well, um . . . if you say so, guess we’d better get home, munchkin.” Mike led his daughter down the drive. From the man’s pained expression, Drew knew Mike wasn’t sure whether to believe Drew or not.
Gretchen looked back at Drew and winked, “Yeah, Dad, Maggie has this great recipe for fried earwigs and . . .”

Blurb:

A shocking secret brings danger to Jack Sinclair and his sister Maggie.

As kids, they were the fearless threesome. As adults, Jack's an accountant; Drew, a lawyer; Maggie, a teacher and camping troop leader. Returning from a weekend camping trip, Maggie receives horrifying news. She refuses to believe her brother’s fatal car crash was an accident. If the police won’t investigate, she’ll do it herself. Convincing Drew Campbell to help is her only recourse.

Drew Campbell was too busy to return his best friend’s phone call. Too busy to attend a camping meeting important to his teen daughter. Too busy to stay in touch with Jack. Logic and reason indicate Jack’s accident was just that--an accident caused by fatigue and fog. Prodded by guilt, he’ll help Maggie even if he thinks she’s wrong.

A break-in at Jack’s condo convinces Maggie she’s right. Then her home is searched. What did Jack do that puts Maggie in danger?

#IWSG: Good Month

Happy Insecure Writers Support Group Day. IWSG is the brainchild of Ninja Captain Alex J. Cavanaugh.

Purpose: To share and encourage. Writers can express doubts and concerns without fear of appearing foolish or weak. Those who have been through the fire can offer assistance and guidance. It’s a safe haven for insecure writers of all kinds! Thanks, Alex, for starting this group and keeping it going.

Thanks to this month's awesome hosts:  Erika Beebe, Sandra Hoover, Susan Gourley, and Lee Lowery!

The first few months of this year were not good for me. This group and others plus friends and family helped a lot. July was a great month. A new book released, two more stories are coming along nicely, and I lost twenty pounds.

When my doctor said I'd finally hit the magic A1C number that indicated diabetes, he told me losing weight would help my chronic back pain as well as the diabetes. I joined Weight Watchers because it's helped before. I'm pleased that my weight loss is slow and steady. My plan when I see my doctor later this month is to have lost twenty-five pounds. It took me a long time to gain the weight so I know it will take a long time to shed it. The main thing is healthy eating, and I've been working on that.

In January, I started a new story--the fourth in the Alex O'Hara mystery series. I stopped to finished a different book, and now I'm sort of back to it. I say "sort of" because I'm also working on a science fiction romance, THE SPY, featuring two characters who appeared in other stories. I haven't released a sci-fi romance for two years. I need to get this one out this year. When I run into a glitch, instead of not writing at all, I shift over to Alex O'Hara #4 (I don't have a title yet). It's been a back and forth so both stories are progressing well.

The best news from July is the release of NUMBERS NEVER LIE, a romantic suspense. Then I a subsequent blog tour. Thanks so much to the many people who invited me to guest, especially people from this group. This Saturday, I'll be at Ellen Jacobsen's blog, The Cynical Sailor & His Salty Sidekick.

NUMBERS NEVER DIE began over 15 years ago, was set aside then picked up again this winter. I am so proud of this story.

NUMBERS NEVER LIE
A Romantic Suspense
By Diane Burton
Release Date:  July 9, 2018
Length: approx. 80,000 words
Available at Amazon  http://a.co/gUmO9wZ

Optional question: What pitfalls would you warn other writers to avoid on their publication journey?

Life is going to throw you curves. Demands from family and job will create a lot of stress. So much so that your creative muse will take a hike. You feel guilty that you can't write, or write as much as you used to. Take deep breaths and let it go. Roll with the those curves. Do what you need to do. The story will always be there--even 15 years later LOL Does it sound like I've been there? Yep, and wished I'd handled it better.
