#WeWriWa ~ THE SPY: Genna Changes Appearance #sfr

Each weekend, the Weekend Writing Warriors share an 8 - 10 sentence snippet. Be sure to visit the other authors. You can find them here.

I'm sharing snippets from The Spy: An Outer Rim Novel. It's the 4th book in my series featuring strong women on the frontier of space.

Because this is a work in progress, suggestions are greatly appreciated. Please excuse the creative punctuation, necessary to keep this within the guidelines.

After Vorinda gave her more instructions and background on Quintall d’Sernin, she finally left his office. Tripping lightly down the stairs, instead of using the conveyance, she stopped at the san-fac on the third floor, where she changed into well-worn trousers and big shirt made of coarse-spun, worn by space jockeys and other Rimmers. The multiple pockets almost eliminated the need for a tote, the gift from Laning, but she treasured the dark green zircan leather bag and would never toss it out, like the card the Chellian conveyance driver had given her. She wouldn’t see him again, even though she admired his persistence—what an entrepreneur.
Genna added the final touch to hide her identity, a nondescript brown wig that brushed her shoulders, which she fluffed it to make it seem more natural. Soon, she could go back to her original appearance, so she would be more easily recognized by those who knew her on Galeriana, according to Commissioner Vorinda as he gave the last of his instructions.
“I will be your handler on this assignment,” His announcement surprised her—while she didn’t expect Kolang to be her handler, she assumed she’d be assigned a senior agent.
To have the commissioner as her handler temporarily overwhelmed Genna—a privilege or a hindrance? Would he second-guess her decisions made in the field or give her free rein? He must trust her to get the job done.
She wished she had his belief in her skills.

Please stay safe during this pandemic. Sending virtual hugs.

  2. I think having the commissioner as her handler show just how important, or maybe secretive, this mission is.

  4. I think I'd be a little rattled if the commissioner was my handler. Intriguing snippet.

  5. Kind of a double edged sword, to have such a high ranking handler. I like all the many layers you've got going in this story and the way you create lots of questions in my head as to what's truly going on, let alone what will happen next. Terrific snippet!

    1. Wow, thanks, Veronica. I agree about the double-edged sword--scary yet he's shown he likes her and he is experienced--he was Quin's original handler (not sure if I ever mentioned that).

  6. I'm thinking it's a combination of the two--a privilege and a hindrance--but that's what makes for a good story! :) Nice snippet!

    1. Yep, Daryl. She has 2nd thoughts about him being her handler--not that she has a choice.

  8. I agree with Jessica, they gave her the commander which means this mission must be taken seriously. I can't wait to see how these two work together.

  9. If I were her, I think I be beginning to wonder if I were being set up for a colossal failure. I hope not, though I can't think of any better reason for all the odd decisions being made about this assignment.

  10. Having a commander as my handler would intimate me a bit. Great snippet.

  11. I'd rather not have the commander as my handler. That surely must be unusual, so what's up with it.

    1. Unusual is right, Elaine. I wouldn't want him, either, no matter how "fatherly" he is toward her.

  12. I wonder if he trusts her or just wants to control her. It seems pretty serious though.

  13. Interesting indeed. I am seeing it as keeping this covert. With the threat of shipping off Kolang, it seems like because he knew too much. He is her handler to keep as few involved as possible. That can be dangerous. Especially if she gets in deep and something happens to the commissioner, then shes out on a limb.

  14. Wow--the pressure, having the commish watching over her shoulder.

I see the possibility of some bad things in her future, too, like the commissioner possibly playing for the other side--or even both sides...

    Nice! So many possibilities!

  15. I'd be intimidated if the commissionaire were my handler. I wonder if there isn't a secret agenda behind it all.
