#WeWriWa #8Sunday ~ Mission to New Earth

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warrior and 8 Sentence Sunday time, the weekly hop for everyone who loves to write! Writers share an 8 to 10 sentence snippet. Be sure to visit the other writers. You can find them here.

My snippet is from my new sci-fi romance novella MISSION TO NEW EARTH. Marsh is upset about something, and Sara doesn't have a clue what's wrong. She finally finds out.

“We screwed up again--in RT, it could kill us,” Marsh announced as soon as the five of us joined him, his voice echoing off the hard surfaces of the lav.
“You and your damn RT,” Tom spat out. “Why can’t you just say real time like a normal person?”
Marsh was right to pick the only place that wasn’t monitored. We absolutely didn’t want the directors to think we weren’t a well-functioning team. They could pull us and put in the Shadow Team--our replacements.
“Okay, guys, what did I miss?” With a forced grin, I raised my right hand. “I swear I wasn’t dreaming about a day at the beach during the sim.”

The Story:

Earth’s overpopulation and dwindling resources force the United Earth Space Agency to expedite exploration of new planets for a possible new home. When new crises ensue—a giant tsunami and the threat of nuclear winter—the timeline changes. Eight years of training crammed into four. Sara Grenard and her team prepare for launch, but are they ready for the one-way trip? Will the Goldilocks planet prove just right for Earth’s inhabitants? Before time runs out.

I'm running a Giveaway through the month of September for a $10 Amazon Gift Card. Click on Rafflecopter to enter.

  1. I enjoyed her attempt at humor to defuse the tension. It says a lot about her role in this group.

  2. I like the group dynamics and I always love your 'voice'. (Although when I read 'RT' I immediately think of Romance Times magazine LOL, being a romance author!)

  5. Love this story concept -- such drama and dangerous. I liked the way you worked in what RT was. My first thought was, what the hell is RT? LOL.

  6. Like the others, I like Sara's attempt to diffuse the situation, and how you explained RT without telling. Great snippet!

    2. What happens when you're gone all day to an RWA chapter meeting followed by birthday dinner for SIL, followed by a dead car and AAA? You play catch up all day Sunday. Off to read your posts.

  8. I wrote about a video game-obsessed character in a short story, so I picked up the meaning of RT. Loved the dialogue and the injection of humour! Great work! :)

    1. The sim (simulation). That's what Marsh believes. Prior to this scene, the director congratulated Sara that her team did well (even without her).

    1. Thanks, Shari. I tried not to overwhelm the reader with too many people in the 1st chapter. But the 6 of them are a team.

  11. I echoe Shari's comment. They sound like they are having a rough time smoothing out their personalities and settling into a "team" mentality...a leader needs to step up. Who will it be?

  14. Hopefully they can make light of the situation... though I wonder what will happen if they really messed up. ;)

  15. Sounds like they're facing a very dangerous situation so Marsh is right about RT. They have more important things to worry about than annoying speech habits! Great friction in this snippet adds to the mounting suspense.

  16. I like the humor, and how their personalities ring through in this scene.

  17. Good that they went somewhere they couldn't be overheard to air their grievances about mistakes. Best not to let on that their group has problems.
